Dept. of Biology Chair Dr. Jim Gelsleichter, and Associate Professor Dr. Quincy Gibson, share details about the Coastal Marine Biology programs at UNF. Dr. Gibson leads a dolphin research program studying the behaviors of dolphins present in the St. Johns River. Dr. Gelsleichter details how this research and other programs apply to the world abroad, through cooperations with programs like Ocearch, coastal resilience, and more. This research pushes boundaries of biooogical and ecological sciences, and the impacts originate from the local Jacksonville community.

Abraham Ovalle is a FinTech major at UNF, and joins JMN to discuss this program, and how he plans to make a career in the field. FinTech (Financial Technology) is a STEM science integrating math and business. He's well on his way, having served 4 career related internships and already having a FT job in accounting. HIs experiences exemplify how UNF students apply their academic achievements to SWOOP into future success!

In addition to world class academic, business, and technology programs, UNF is also home to world class athletes. UNF senior Smilla Kolbe shares her experiences as a student athlete, and is the first Osprey to qualify for and compete in the 2025 NCAA Track and Field Championships, against the best runners in the country. Additionally she was the 2024 Atlantic Sun Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year, working on an academic program in psychology and criminal justice.

Graduate student Carleigh Eagle works as an engineer at Mayo Clinic, and is pioneering 3D imaging and modeling technology for use in healthcare and medical/surgical processes. As a sample of this technology, she has a 3D printed model of her own brain to use in demonstrations. In cooperation with Mayo, this and a variety of chemistry, biology, and engineering programs provide innovations in surgical processes and medical therapies. Carleigh is an example of the student, program, and institutional intersections between UNF and the local (and global!) community.

Dr. Limayem discusses the relationship between UNF and the local community, UNF Giving Day on April 1, and how donations directly fund academic and research programs at the University.

Action News jax anchor and community activist Tenikka Hughes joins JMN, to share details of her 8th annual Tenikka's Books for Kids drive. The fundamental key to education is literacy, and Tenikka promotes activities to get kids involved in reading, get parents to read with their kids, and hopefully build a lifelong love for the activity. The Jacksonville Library Foundation is a partner organization making books available to local schools, churches, and families.
