After the rape of Dinah, Simeon and Levi, her brothers, took revenge and killed all the men of Shechem. Jacob reprimanded his two sons for their violent acts and feared the destruction of his clans by vengeful Gentile neighbors. God once again rescued Jacob and told him to return to Bethel, where God appeared to him when he fled from his brother Esau. Jacob departed with divine protection, entered Bethel and set up an altar. While journeying onward, his wife Rachel died in childbirth, giving Jacob his twelfth and final son. She named him Benoni, but Jacob renamed him Benjamin. Also, around this time Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn son slept with his father’s concubine/wife. Finally, Jacob returned to his father Isaac’s house; and Isaac died at 180 years old, peacefully buried by both his sons, Esau and Jacob.
