Jakarta Bintangs: 25 Years of Perpetuating the Myth

This is the Jakarta Bintangs AFL Grand Final Special Edition Podcast, featuring two legends of the Club, Kris Vandermeer, and Ben Corbett. Die hard Dogs and Dees supporters respectively, but only one will end the weekend a winner. They tell us where they believe they are going to win it!

The dawn of a new era, out of the Hak run dictatorship, the Bintangs embarked on a rebirth guided by “the Force” and led by the Jedi Master. The super draft of 2010, BJ nights to never forget and tattoos never to be removed, the Bintangs 2010-2012 spawned a new generation.

Amongst a time of disaster in the club, the Bintangs spirit shone through to unite and embrace one and all and prove that the mate ship forged on the footy field wearing the Bintangs jumper is stronger than any fundamentalist ideologies.

Amidst another turbulent period in Indonesia that resulted in a high turnover of members, the Bintangs continued to be more than a footy club for those in Jakarta, while finding new ways to grow through alliances and development.

Amidst a challenging environment, a new club grew. These three legends will share their experience and how they were part of building a culture and legacy that lives on!

Following the successful foundation period, the club grew and entered a golden era of tours, championships and characters. This episode looks at 1999-2002 and features club legends Tim Hakfoort, Rob Spurr, Neil Thompson and Sam Modica.

Hosted by the Jakarta Bintangs President, Ben Giles, we've invited two revered Bintangs legends, Bruce Morgan and Ken Allen, and one notorious Bintangs & AFL Asia character, Julian "Rooster" Clark, onto the podcast to speak about the inauguration of the club and its humble beginnings, spanning the years 1995-1999. There are stories of epic Grand Final functions, games against visiting navy crews, pioneering tours to Bali and Singapore, the initiation of the AFL Asia Championships and the beginnings of AFL development in Indonesia.
