The time of the guru is over. The time of handing your power over to a belief system or a spiritual leader is done, because it’s time to trust yourself.
As we move into the next phase of our spiritual growth, we find there’s no better teacher than ourselves. That includes being a better guide than your own Spirit Guide, better than any teacher you’ve ever had, better than me. The trick is getting to know yourself well enough to recognize what it feels like when Spirit is speaking versus what it feels like when it’s your intuition, your ego, your fear, or your trauma. Once you know those aspects of your own consciousness, they’ll teach you what you need to know in any situation. It won’t make you immune to being fooled (people can be tricky), but it will keep you from staying fooled for long, and it will keep you out of cults, conspiracy thinking, and other unhealthy influences.
Much of what I know about personal growth comes from my Spirit Guide, but it also comes from wonderful teachers I’ve had: Maria, Beatrex, and Alora, my very first teacher. They taught me a great deal. But once I had the basics down, my Guide told me: no more teachers, it’s just you and me now. Shortly after, I found myself living alone in New Mexico. That was ten years ago, and in that decade, I’ve learned a great deal, which is what I want to share with you: how to work with Spirit Guides, how to work with your own inner knowing, and how to build real, empowered agency without being swayed by outside influences that aren’t true for you.
How Do You Know It’s Really Your Guide?
Many people wonder how to actually get messages from their Guides. Today I want to teach you a technique Alora taught me about twenty years ago, one I still consider the most powerful of everything I teach about working with Spirit Guides.
Some people get signs, ideas, or sudden insights and assume they’re from their Guide. Sometimes they are. But sometimes it’s ego. Sometimes it’s the law of reflection: the external world mirroring back something you already believe or want to believe. Sometimes it’s just wishful thinking. So, we need a reliable way to check: was that actually your Guide?
In an earlier video, we talked about receiving signs and general guidance. This time, we’re going deeper, learning to get an actual physical sensation from your Guide, one you can use to confirm, again and again, that a message is really theirs.
Set the Right Intention First
Before you try this, intention matters enormously. If you’re doing this because you want to become a famous psychic, it won’t work. Your Guide won’t feed your ego, because fame is always ego-driven. (Trust me, I’m a Leo. I know exactly how ego can hijack a spiritual path.)
Your intention has to match your Guide’s intention: serving your highest good, and only your highest good. So before beginning, set this intention clearly: “I want to work with my Spirit Guide to serve my highest good and help me toward my highest potential.” And you have to actually believe it. Hidden motives, even ones you’ve hidden from yourself, will block the process. It can’t be about being able to tell people you can talk to your Spirit Guide. It has to be for you and you alone that you do this.
This is why intention matters so much: if it isn’t clear and sincere, you risk attracting low-level entities who are happy to pretend to be your Guide. That’s a road you don’t want to go down.
Your Guide is there to help you, not the world. The world isn’t their concern; you are. Even in my own work, when I teach and share my Guide’s messages, I do it for my joy, not because he’s assigned me some mission. When I do readings, I ask him for messages for my clients and students, and he delivers beautifully. But if I stopped tomorrow, that would be entirely fine with him. He’s never once told me I’m “the one,” called to “teach the masses.” That kind of thinking is ego, not guidance.
This is the heart of it: your Guide will help you help others if you ask, but it’s never mandatory, because Spirit has no agenda. You don’t have to answer some cosmic calling to be a spiritual person unless you want to. This is entirely up to you. And that’s exactly why you are the teacher, not your Guide. You can always ask for help, direction, advice, and insight. But you’re the one who decides what to do with it.
The Practice: Feeling Your Guide’s “Yes”
So, how do you know whether an idea, a nudge, or a sign is from your Guide, your intuition, or your ego? Here’s how to find out.
Get into a quiet, comfortable space, sitting, lying down, even in your car, somewhere you can close your eyes and turn your attention fully inward.
Begin with three cleansing breaths. These open your energy field, settle you, and prepare you for connection. Breathe in slowly through your nose, and blow it out gently through your mouth. Repeat three times.
Then let your breathing settle into a natural, gentle rhythm in and out of your nose, eyes closed. Check in with your body, release any tension, get as comfortable as you can.
Ask your Guide to help you sense their presence. Silently, telepathically, invite your Guide, and only your Guide, here to serve your highest good, to let you know they’re near. See if you notice anything: a feeling in your heart, a sense of them being behind you, beside you, or in front of you. This part isn’t the main exercise, it’s simply opening your awareness. Whether you feel anything, thank your Guide for being with you. This can take practice; sensitivity builds with consistency. Your Guide will always be gentle: sacred law doesn’t allow them to startle or scare you, so the sensation may be subtle at first.
Now asked for your “yes” signal. With your eyes still closed, breathing gently, ask your Guide, and only your Guide, to give you a physical sensation that means yes. Tune into your body for any pressure, tickle, or tingling. People experience this differently: pressure on the heart or the crown of the head, a tickle on the cheek, tingling in the stomach or legs. It might also come through as an emotional wave: sudden peace, love, or joy. If nothing comes right away, settle back in and ask again. When you’re done, give thanks, whether you felt anything.
If you felt something but aren’t sure it was real, you can ask your Guide to amplify it, to strengthen it to be more unmistakable. That’s a completely valid ask.
If nothing happens at first, that’s okay; this is a skill that builds with repetition. Most of us live very much in our heads, somewhat closed off from the physical, so learning to receive this kind of signal takes practice for nearly everyone.
Trusting the Signal
Once you’ve identified your “yes” sensation, that’s really all you need; you don’t need a “no” signal. In my experience, Guides don’t like saying no, and Spirit avoids it. If something is answered “no” often, or bluntly told you what to do, it likely isn’t your Guide. Real Guides are unfailingly positive, loving, gentle, and non-demanding. They’ll offer suggestions if you ask for advice, but they will never issue commands. That would violate Divine Law.
This “yes” sensation isn’t limited to meditation. Once you’ve calibrated it, it can show up anywhere: in the middle of a business meeting, mid-conversation, any time you silently ask a question. Guides speak through ideas, inspiration, imagination, and dreams; this technique gives you a way to check your interpretation in real time.
One reassuring detail: your Guide will typically choose a sensation you can’t consciously produce yourself, something distinct from any ordinary itch or twitch you already experience. That’s part of what makes it trustworthy. It’s a sensation that stands apart, precisely so you can’t second-guess whether you imagined it.
I still use this tool constantly, even now, twenty years and countless conversations with my Guide later. I get plenty of direct, verbal answers these days, but I still love calling on that unmistakable physical “yes.” There’s no doubting it. There’s nothing else it could be but their reminder that they are there and cheering me on.
Try this practice and see what you notice. I’d love to hear how your Guide responded. Leave a comment and let me know, especially if you ran into any trouble along the way. And join me for my livestreams on https://www.youtube.com/@JanetKadow every Saturday at 12pm Pacific / 3pm Eastern.
