Janet Kay Settles Schindler was born July 23, 1947, in Fremont to Donn and Helen (Kavan) Settles.  Jan grew up on a farm in rural Scribner where she and her family were active in 4H.  She graduated from Scribner High School in 1965, continuing her education at Wayne State Teachers College.  Jan moved to Lincoln where she worked at the Love Library.  She then moved to California on a whim with a friend where she met Ray Bedsaul; married on June 20, 1967, and had one son, Kris.  While in California she worked for Hughes Aircraft but one of her favorite California memories was working at 101 Cafe along the coast in Oceanside.  Her love for the ocean lived with her for the rest of her life.  She and Kris moved back to Nebraska in 1975. They settled in Lincoln, sharing an apartment with two other girls. She got a job with First MidAmerican Investment Co where she worked in the trading room. Jan was well versed in the stock market and still followed it up until her death.

A few years later, fate had her walking through the doors of Ron’s Pharmacy in North Bend. However, it took a random double blind date later on when she realized it was the pharmacist from North Bend, the rest is history. Jan and Ron were married on July 23, 1981.  They lived in Lincoln where their daughter, Shelley, was born. Ron and Jan eventually moved to North Bend and shortly after welcomed their son, Jamie. They co-owned and operated Ron’s Pharmacy until 2014.  Jan was the retail manager and bookkeeper, she took pride in maintaining and operating the front end of the pharmacy.  She, along with the family, sold fireworks in the area until 2001.  Jan was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church. In the past she served on the Church Council, Piecemakers Quilting Ladies, Material Girls, Goldenrod Garden Club, North Bend Library Board and she and Ron served on the Ducks Unlimited board for 32 years.

Jan loved attending Husker sporting events. She loved traveling to cities, visiting the ocean and Jackson Hole, especially the Tetons. She enjoyed growing her flowers and plants, both indoors and outdoors. Jan was a great cook and enjoyed it, especially making soups. Her biggest accomplishment was making kolaches. She was always striving to replicate the old Czech flavor. They weren’t always pretty but they tasted great. She loved genealogy and working with her mom for endless hours discovering past ancestors.  Jan took any chance to visit and attend events for her beloved grandkids.  She had a special way of developing a personal connection with each of her grandchildren.  Jan simply enjoyed spending time with her best friend, Ron.

Surviving are her husband, Ron Schindler of North Bend, son, Kris (Lyn) Bedsaul of Portland, Oregon, daughter, Shelley (Dustin) Schulte of Seward, son, James (Renae) Schindler of Yankton, South Dakota, grandchildren, Paige and Claire Bedsaul, Katelin and Mattie Schulte and Finley and Fredrick Schindler.  Also surviving are her brothers Jerome (Joan) Settles, Alan (Cindy) Settles, Ronn (Jana) Settles and brothers-in-law Bob (Lorrie) Friesen and Jess Kucera.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Donn and Helen Settles, in laws Lester and Darlene Schindler, sisters-in-law Sandie Friesen and Deb Kucera and nephew, Tyler Friesen.
