Annette Marie (Wachal) Vodehnal, of Schuyler, Nebraska, passed away peacefully in her home on October 21, 2026, leaving behind a beautiful legacy of faith, love, compassion, and a lifetime devoted to the care of others.

Born on December 23, 1944, in Columbus, Nebraska, to Arlene (Svec) and Alvin Wachal, Annette grew up with a lively spirit, a love for music, and gift for friendship. Many of the friendships she formed in her youth remained a source of joy and companionship throughout her life. Her childhood was filled with simple pleasures, including time spent fishing with her father. She graduated from Schuyler High School in 1963, where she was active in the school band as a flutist, drum major, and baton twirler.

Annette went on to attend Creighton University, graduating in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. For 30 years, she devoted her professional life to caring for patients at Schuyler Community Hospital. Nursing was more than a profession; it was a natural expression of her generous heart and her remarkable gift for caring for others.

On August 16, 1967, Annette married her best friend, Robert Vodehnal. Together, they built a life rich in love and faith, made all the more beautiful by the blessing of their four children. Their 59 years of marriage were a testament to their enduring devotion to one another and to the life they so lovingly shared.

For Annette, love was often expressed in the quiet generosity of preparing something special for those gathered around her table. There were homemade dumplings and sauerkraut for the holidays, the brownies everyone loved, and the cherished tradition of decorating cookies together, year after year.

Even after retiring from nursing, Annette's calling to care for others continued. She devoted herself to caring for a child with autism, offering the same patience, tenderness, and compassion that had defined her years as a nurse. Her life was marked by a quiet generosity that found expression in the simple, faithful act of being present to those who needed her.

Above all, Annette's greatest earthly joy was her family. She was a loving wife, devoted mother, proud grandmother, and cherished great-grandmother. She delighted in the lives of her children, seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, finding happiness in their accomplishments, their laughter, and the ordinary moments that became treasured memories.

At family gatherings, Annette was often among the first to turn to the little ones and ask, "Shall we play a game? How about the penny game?" It was in these simple moments, surrounded by the laughter and delight of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, that her joy shone so brightly.

Her Catholic faith was the quiet and steadfast foundation of her life, guiding her through every season. A lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and St. Mary's Guild in Schuyler, Annette shared her faith generously with others. Together, she and Bob devoted 30 years to teaching religious education (CCD), and Annette also spent 6 years preparing for children to receive their First Holy Communion. Annette lived her faith with a devotion that was both deeply personal and beautifully constant.

Each week, she could be seen approaching the votive candles at St. Mary's to light one large candle that would burn for seven days. Week after week, she faithfully returned to light another, always with the same intention: to pray for her family.

Often with a rosary in her hand and her prayer books resting beside her chair, Annette was a pillar of faith for her family. Her favorite Scripture passage, Psalm 23, reflected the deep trust with which she placed her life in the hands of the Lord:

"The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want."

Her weekly Holy Hour was a sacred appointment she rarely missed. If circumstances prevented her from going to church, she would spend that time in prayer at home. A faithful attendee of daily Mass, Annette knew the source of her strength and returned to Him with quiet perseverance.

Annette was also an enthusiastic sports fan. Some of her happiest moments were spent cheering from the sidelines as her children and grandchildren competed over the years. Her loyalty extended to her beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers and Creighton Bluejays, whom she followed with unwavering enthusiasm.

Annette is survived by her beloved husband, Robert; her children, Stephanie (Chad) Vodehnal, Stacie (Lance) Johnson, Alissa (Aaron) Clough, and Nathan (Crystal) Vodehnal; her grandchildren, Anycia Flynn, Kaitlen (Tony) Garcia, Connor Flynn, Ryan (Natalie), Carly, Landon Johnson, Andrew and Zachary Clough, Kazen and Kruze Vodehnal; and her great-grandchildren, Charlynn, Jackson, Hudson, Emmalynn and Paislynn Garcia, sister-in-law, Theresa Wachal, niece and nephew, Christopher Wachal and Christiana (Wachal) Strack.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arlene and Alvin Wachal; her mother and father-in-law, Edwin and Emma Vodehnal; and her brother, Fred.

Let us pray with Annette the words of the psalm she cherished throughout her life:

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” — Psalm 23:6
