The Bible in a Year: Daily Reading & Devotion

January 21 | God Is Working the Details

Listen Later

Today’s Bible in a Year reading from Exodus 1–3 and Matthew 14:1–21 centers on a steady and hope-filled truth: God is at work behind the scenes, even when circumstances shift suddenly and unjustly. Across both passages, we see that God’s purposes are not interrupted by changing seasons, political power, or human fear. His work continues quietly and faithfully, even when the story takes a difficult turn.

As Exodus opens, the narrative moves from blessing to oppression. A new king rises in Egypt who does not remember Joseph or the role God played in preserving the nation. Fear replaces gratitude, and God’s people are forced into bondage. It is into this harsh reality that Moses is born, under a decree meant to end his life before it begins. Yet God carefully protects him, turning danger into deliverance and placing him exactly where he will one day confront Pharaoh himself.

Matthew 14 echoes that same pattern of quiet, intentional care. Faced with overwhelming need and limited resources, Jesus does not rush or react in fear. Instead, He takes what is available and multiplies it, providing for everyone without waste or panic. What appears insufficient becomes more than enough in His hands.

Together, these passages invite us to trust God’s work in seasons that feel uncertain or unfair. Oppression does not cancel purpose, and scarcity does not limit God’s provision. Today’s reading reminds us that God remains faithful, attentive, and present, carefully working out the details of our lives even when the path forward is still unfolding.
