Welcome back to Tech for Good, I’m your host. Today we’re talking about how Crosstalk Solutions tackled a “nonprofit network design for under $1000 bucks.” After a storm hit the Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary and damaged their equipment, the sanctuary had already bought some new gear “but were unsure as to best practices for their deployment.” Enter a UniFi-based solution featuring a Security Gateway, a PoE switch, and wireless access points strategically placed to cover offices, public areas, and outdoor enclosures. The network is segmented into staff and guest VLANs, keeping critical operations secure while offering reliable Wi-Fi to visitors. Remote management via the UniFi Controller means the sanctuary’s tech volunteers can monitor performance and troubleshoot offsite. All together, the hardware and setup stayed under that $1,000 threshold without sacrificing reliability or scalability. This project shows that with smart planning and affordable gear, even nonprofits can stay connected and focused on their mission, no matter what Mother Nature throws their way.
