In this electrifying Halloween Special, Jay of the Dead and Mackula welcome esteemed guest, Dr. Rick Moody, retired film professor and first-time podcaster, for a very controversial and unconventional "count-up" of their Revised Top 10 All-Time Best Horror Movies! Dr. Moody is one of Jay of the Dead's mentors, and he was also the film professor of three Horror Avengers: Jay, Mackula and Dr. Walking Dead Kyle Bishop! Doc Moody was formerly more into disturbing Horror movies but has since mellowed in recent years. Even so, he remains a big fan and connoisseur of Found Footage and lesser-known Horror content found on YouTube! But back to this show… As Doc Moody would say, Episode 168 "delivers the goods" with not one but three Top 10 lists, and trust us, you've never heard all-time favorite Horror lists like these before! Y'all are probably gonna have kittens!

Along the way, the hosts pay tribute to the late Diane Keaton, discuss Shelley Duvall as Mackula's "cinema mom," and reflect on the eerie setting of this episode, as it was recorded during an atmospheric and formidable, Utah thunderstorm. As each movie pick is revealed, the conversation meanders off into relevant and random tangents about some of Horror's dark corners, such as "Experiential Horror." During this show, we also reveal which Horror Avenger longs to moonlight as a "ghost therapist." Listeners will even hear about Mackula's past ambitions as an actor; his live, on-air freak-out over fingernail tapping at his window; and an impromptu cameo from Dr. Moody's cat, "Mimi."

Jay of the Dead'sNew Horror Movies presents… the 55th Edition of the world's greatest Zombie Movie Podcast — Dead Man Still Walking, starring Dr. Walking Dead Kyle Bishop! In this fascinating and unexpectedly subversive episode, Dr. Bishop welcomes special guest Jay of the Dead to explore the surprising horror history of "The Purple Smurfs" (yes, those Smurfs!) and their uncanny place in zombie canon. This is a must-listen for fans of zombie cinema. Likely inspired somewhat by Richard Matheson's novel, "I Am Legend" (1954) — yet before George Romero's shambling ghouls — there existed a little-known, infected-zombie narrative within the Belgian comic, Les Schtroumpfs Noirs ("The Black Smurfs") from 1959, later wisely adapted for American audiences in 1963 as "The Purple Smurfs." What seems like a simple children's story reveals shocking thematic roots in infection, rage, and apocalypse, complete with an urgent race to find a cure. Dr. Bishop herein declares, "Yes, the Purple Smurfs are zombies."

Also during Episode 166 here, Jay and Kyle dive deep into both the original comic source material and the adapted, 1981 TV episode — part of a Halloween special featuring "The Haunted Smurf" as well as "The Purple Smurfs" — unpacking how the latter's infection narrative even precedes films like "The Crazies" (1973), "Rabid" (1977), and "28 Days Later" (2002). They discuss the sociocultural implications, from 1980s "Satanic Panic" anxieties to the comic's troubling racial undertones in its early form. Jay playfully speculates whether the story serves as a bizarre, STD cautionary tale — and even debuts his first-ever Horror trailer for The Purple Smurfs (1981) TV episode! Dead Man Still Walking is a biweekly, short-form solocast hosted by Dr. Walking Dead Kyle Bishop, author of American Zombie Gothic and How Zombies Conquered Popular Culture. Time for the penultimate episode review of ALIEN: EARTH – Episode 007: Emergence! So, here in Episode 161 of Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies, Jay of the Dead is joined by Mister Watson, Dr. Walking Dead, GregaMortis, Mackula and special guest Kombat Karl "The Mad Irishman" from Movie Podcast Weekly. To make sure y'all get what you paid for, this review begins with some (not exhaustive, but some) scene-level breakdowns of Episode 7, but the discussion quickly splinters into multiple heated theories. For instance, Kirsch's ambiguous behavior takes center stage, as Jay of the Dead voices his disappointment with Kirsh's disloyal turn from Kavalier to a rogue Agent of Science At All Costs. Kombat Karl applauds the fresh portrayal of the Xenomorph as an intelligent, potentially controllable creature. But inevitably, this raises the debate question: Does taming the terror take the teeth out of the franchise? Well, does it? Not rhetorical.

Then your spiffy spacemen dig into the ethics and narrative direction of the show, especially pertaining to the synthetic children and their unpredictable development. The guys revisit the theory that the real threat may not be the Xenomorphs at all, but the children themselves, revealing the kids as the true "monsters" of the series: cold, calculating, and emotionally unmoored. GregaMortis and Mister Watson weigh in on Marcy's increasingly violent use of her Wendy powers, wondering aloud whether she's being framed as a tragic anti-hero or something far more nefarious. So join us for our spoiler-filled descent into Alien Earth Episode 7 — a place where Xenomorphs evolve, children outthink their creators, and nothing stays safe for long, especially Watson and Karl's alcoholic beverages.

In Episode 160 of Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies, the Horror Avengers return for their weekly installment of ALIEN: EARTH (2025) with a review of Episode 006: "The Fly." Due to some last-minute cancellations, Jay of the Dead is joined by Mackula (and later, Dr. Walking Dead), as well as the ever-colorful Kombat Karl "The Mad Irishman" from Movie Podcast Weekly fame. Sadly, GregaMortis could not join us this week, but he will return next time. Warning: Major plot spoilers lie ahead! And yes, it wouldn't be Alien Earth without strange metaphors and offbeat alien lore. Dr. Bishop interprets the fly-and-spider imagery as a nod to the show's silicon-based "metal-eating" monstrosities, while the hosts debate the uneven maturing patterns of the synthetic children. Is Wendy / Marcy's accelerated intellect genius writing or sloppy scripting?

Jurassic Park comparisons bubble up, and Jay predicts that these hybrid kids may be every bit as dangerous — maybe even more so — than the five xenomorphs themselves! Speaking of xenomorphs, your hosts address the terminology of "face-hugger" in the "Alien" franchise and dissect face-hugger gestation with how it lines up with what we've seen in the "Alien: Romulus" timeline. With this new menagerie of Beastly Freak organisms, Jay classifies the eyeball-squid thing as an "Ocular Octopod," and he calls the ill-fated, science vessel USCSS Maginot, "Con Air but With Aliens." Also in this episode, you will probably not be surprised to hear Mackula say, "I think it's just that darn sheep!" Kombat Karl translates, in the way that only he can, what the xenomorph sentiments are saying, and Mackula very excitedly draws parallels between the alien xenomorphs and The Shape, Michael Myers. In addition, Mackula and Karl chat about whether Alien Earth makes any references that nod to "Blade Runner," as Jay asks Karl if Boy Kavalier is a "replicant."
