August 10, 2020Kelly's Heroes on Jazz NorthwestBass player Red Kelly (back row, third from left) was a veteran of Stan Kenton, Charlie Barnett, Harry James and Woody Herman bands among others before he retired from the road and operated a jazz club near Olympia called the Tumwater Conservatory in the 70s, and later, Kellys in Tacoma in the 80s and 90s. July 13, 2020Johnny Mandel at Jazz Port Townsend remembered on Jazz NorthwestThe justly celebrated composer and arranger Johnny Mandel died June 29 at the age of 94 in Oaji CA. He received multiple Grammy awards and Oscars for his songs and music for films and was a member of the Songwriter's Hall of Fame.
