Each year, through its MN Spin program, the Hennepin County library acquires music by all kinds of Minnesota musical acts. Then, the public can stream the music and library cardholders can download the tracks. The names of artists selected in 2020 were given to the Hook and Ladder to curate into MN Spin Virtual Fest. The fest will be available at the hook mpls dot com at 7PM on January 21 and 28. Hook and Ladder curator Joe Holland talked to Phil Nusbaum about the curation process and the groups presented.

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a day to honor the Civil Rights leader who used nonviolence to dismantle racism, work for justice and create racial equity in our community. He calls himself a born sideman, and he’s been sought after for his sax playing in Minnesota for well over a half century. Fresh from high school, David Karr toured with a big band and then performed for American GIs during the Korean War. In 1954 he moved from to York to Minneapolis to study music at the University of Minnesota. Since then, David Karr has been a go-to sax player in the Twin Cities area. One of the players he most greatly admires was Jerry Mulligan, and he told Phil Nusbaum why.
