In Galatians 5:16-26 Paul teaches that true Christian freedom and holy living come not by law-keeping or human effort (the flesh), but by walking in step with the Holy Spirit. The flesh and Spirit are in constant conflict. The works of the flesh—sexual immorality, idolatry, hatred, strife, jealousy, anger, envy, drunkenness, and the like—exclude one from God's kingdom. Those led by the Spirit are no longer under the law's condemnation and instead produce its fruit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Since we belong to Christ, we have crucified the flesh with its passions. Therefore, let us keep in step with the Spirit—rejecting conceit, provocation, and envy—so that gospel-empowered love and service flow naturally from union with Christ, not legalistic striving.
