यह कहानी जुम्मन शेख़, अलगू चौधरी और जुम्मन शेख़ की मौसी के बीच हुए मतभेदों के इर्द-गिर्द घूमती है। जुम्मन ने अपनी मौसी को बहला-फुसला कर उसकी ज़मीन अपने नाम करवा ली और फिर मौसी के प्रति उसका सारा आदर-सत्कार धरा का धरा रह गया। मौसी इस मामले को पंचायत में ले आती है, जहाँ पंच के रूप में मौसी ने अलगू को चुना। जुम्मन और अलगू बचपन से पक्के मित्र हैं फिर भी अलगू ने जब सच का साथ दिया और जुम्मन के विपक्ष में फ़ैसला सुनाया तो जुम्मन उसका परम शत्रु बन गया।   कुछ दिनों के पश्चात् अलगू के  किसी मामले में  को जुम्मन फ़ैसला सुनाना था।  जुम्मन ने न्याय का साथ देते हुए अलगू के पक्ष में फ़ैसला सुनाया और दोनों के हृदय का मैल उनके आँसुओं से धुल गया।

          यह कहानी प्रेमचंद की पहली कहानी है और इसमें प्रेमचंद ने नारी सशक्तीकरण की अलख जगाने की सफल कोशिश की है।
