Jeff Durban’s Great omission
Jeff durbin is our guest today, Jeff is going to tell us, how books like left behind get our views about end times all wrong, welcome to the show Jeff
Thank you. My first bible study I watched a left behind like movie and looking for signs that it was the end of the world was big part of my early walk with the lord, I didn’t know any better, and what I’m here to prove today is this popular apocalyptic end times theology is wrong, and harmful, because theology matters, if christians think this world is going to hell in hand basket, they will be hiding in a bunker somewhere, and won’t be out doing what they’re actually called to do and that is taking over the world, going into capitol building and decreeing Gods commands and getting all the leaders of the world to make their nations theoracies obedient to all Jesus’s commands. I know that sounds 180 different than what most christians who culturally grew up around left behind baggage, but I can prove it with going to Gods word.
Everyone recognizes at the great commission that the apostles were sent out to go out and make disciples of all nations. Jesus said to the apostles in the great comission at the end of that glorious chapter of Matthew 28. All authority was given to me in heaven and on earth. Not some, all, not just heaven also on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, not some, all. What is a Nation, France Germany, Eygpt Brazil, China.
“teaching them to observe everything not somethings everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.””
From the text It is clear Jesus sent out the apostles with all authority and ability to teach all nations France, Germany, Eygpt Brazil China, to observe everything Jesus commanded the apostles, until the end of the age. When is the end of the age you might ask?
1 Corinthians 15 Paul tells us Jesus must reign in heaven at the father’s right hand until all his enemies are under his feet. Paul quotes from psalm 110. How will this happen, if Jesus is up there, than someone else must put his enimies under his feet. Who, why me and you, those who pick up the baton passed down from the apostles, who were given all authority, not some all to make the nations disciples of Jesus.
When God makes a decree it is unbreakeable it will come to pass. That is why 12 men who had no earthly power, no armies, no wealth, transformed the Roman pagan world, into adopting Christianity as the official religion of Rome, and our history shows us how one nation after another, became a disciple of this unlikely rag tag of men sent out by a decree of their messiah to convert the nations.
The story is not over, it is up to us those who study God’s word, to continue on to make all nations, submit to the commands of Jesus, and when Jesus’s enemies are all under his feet, except for death, than he will return defeating that final enemy and we will hand the authority of the world to him, that we accomplished the great commision, and he will than hand the authority over to the father.
Think of it as we pile up the nations in a great tower reaching up to heaven. But from heaven it is like a foot stole, and when we put the last piece, the last rouge nation up there than jesus will gently step down on the foot stole we piled up for him. This is why theology matters, because if we think about antichrist, and the world getting more evil, than who will be out discipling the nations as we were commanded.
Jeff are super chats are blowing up. Are you good to stick around maybe react to some of the super chats.
Absolutely.
Our first super chat.
I want to read some details from
Revelation 19 about Jesus return to earth. Then ask my question
“A sharp sword came from His mouth, so that He might strike the nations with it. He will also trample the winepress of the fierce anger of God, the Almighty.
“Then I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies gathered together to wage war against the rider on the horse and against His army.”
The rest were killed with the sword that came from the mouth of the rider on the horse, and all the birds were filled with their flesh.”
From those details
Jesus comes back mad, a sword came from his mouth so that he might strike the nations with it? If he is striking the nations with a sword, and the sword kills how can we think Jesus is returning to a world full of obedient nations?
Well in the Old Testament, we know that God used hyperbolic language stars falling from the sky to describe coming judgment to a nation like Egypt of Babylon, but this hyperbolic language is not literal. We have to be very careful about how mad Jesus is at the return, for all we know it’s just an exaggeration, Jesus might be just saying hey thanks guys for getting all the nations to obey all his commands, and can I ask James White and get back to you about this, I’m sure he could elaborate but yeah, we start with the passages that best fit our view, and from there dismiss ones that don’t support it as much. Revelation is maybe talking about the second coming but we can also dismiss it as hyperbolic but 1 Corinthians 15 sure sounded like we have to put all Jesus’s enimies under his feet, or he won’t return.
Next super chat
I’m looking 1 Corinthians 15 right now and reads When he puts all his emimies under his feet, it is not written that we put all his enemies under his feet, it is written that he puts all his enimies under his feet. It doesn’t say, he working through we. I checked Psalm 110 and it reads“This is the declaration of the Lord to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies Your footstool.” So that sounds God the father telling Jesus, sit until I make your enemies your footstool. It does say your people will volunteer on your day of battle, so there is something for us to do, volunteer, but it doesn’t say over the centuries or over the ages, it says on the day of battle, maybe the same day from Revelation 19 when he rides out on his white horse, with his army of volunteers, none the less, it sounds like a brief moment in time, and it is a battle not long drawn out discipleship getting all the nations to obey
My hot take on that is, with out James White here. I’d say your people will volunteer on that day, is symbolic to the last 2000 years, and maybe a thousand more until we get every nation to be obedient to God, however long that takes, the first day was at the beginning of the great commission and that’s the day. See what I mean about volunteering, God doesn’t want us in domesday shelter he wants us, at the captiol buildings reading his commands to the rulers of the world, getting them to legislate following all of Jesus’s commands, and then Jesus will return.
In Matthew 25 When Jesus is talking about his second coming, it looks like Jesus divides the sheep from the goats of people alive during his return, how can he divide the sheep from the goats, if we dicipled all nations turning them all into sheep,
Sheep and goats is probably hyperbolic, and maybe jesus means from all time, or something else that’s hyperbolic.
instead of Jesus preparing a place for us, we prepare this place for his return.
Yes that’s what 1 Corinthians 15 says
Where do you get this idea that people who think jesus returns on white horse mad, think they should be hiding in bomb shelter?
Right before Jesus’s ascension we are told he said this to his diciples
Acts 1:8
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.””
He sent them out to be witnesses to the ends of the earth not to conquer the earth. Not to go hide in shelter. No matter if you think Jesus comes back mad, or happy we got every nation to be a sheep, shouldn’t we be out witnessing.
I get that idea from people saying things like who cares, the whole ship is sinking.
It’s why theology matters even if you think everyone should be out witnessing, if you legitimize Jesus is coming back mad eschatology other people will hide in bunker, and not go out witnessing.
Some of the people I meet who must fervent witnesses I meet thought the end was very near.
Even if they were wrong, about the timing
I don’t think they were wrong with their zeal, because I think Jesus always wanted his people to be out and about witnessing like it might be their last night.
their timing looks bad to atheist, trust me
Don’t atheist suppress god because they love darkness not because of prophetic coherence
Both
How would you diciple a whole nation?
Have them tune into my radio program
Which view do you think is closer to the truth
One believers would live in an evil world, and are given instructions for how to conduct themselves in such,
or two
the Bible is a blueprint slash manifesto to take over the world.
Option two. But in a loving, self sacrificing way.
How can you loving, self sacrficing take over the world, even Jesus comes back, with a sword out of his mouth killing his enimies?
That’s hyperbolic language and the swords really mean that his people over a long long period of time would tell others what the word of God says, and means because the word of god is like a sword and every nation will finally go the Bible is all true we submit and will now obey it. and then jesus comes down using the Tower of Babel foot stole we completed for him, and he pats us all on the head before he destoys death.
