“We seek to live with nobility hoping that our life will contribute to human good. However, history may seem indifferent to our intentions. Sometimes what we intend as good turns into bad. And sometimes what we see as bad will turn into good. The smaller lesson is that we don’t have complete control over the outcome of our intentions. The larger lesson is that either good or evil can become each other through the magic of social transformation.
During this service I will share an experience of evil in my personal life that became a shower of blessing. And I will look to history for further illustrations.”

We have all heard people encourage us to take risks, to dream big, to go beyond our comfort zone and achieve what might otherwise seem unattainable. Good advice as far as it goes, but isn’t there a reason we reach for safety? Isn’t there a reason we pay lots of money to avoid risk of all kinds? Perhaps the answer lies not in either pole, but in the art of learning to manage risks so we know what to do when things fall apart.

Theologian Sharon Welch wrote a book years ago titled, “A Feminist Ethic of Risk.” In it, she suggests that we avoid risk because we’ve been taught that failure or unintended consequences are to be avoid, almost above all else. But much of how the world will turn out is unknowable. Choosing to avoid risk means not avoiding the future, and avoiding all surprises, even the ones that delight. Some risks are just worth taking.

Years ago I came across a powerful set of interviews with people about the connection between what they carried in their lunchboxes and how the world saw them. Lunchbox moments when the lines were clearly drawn of insiders and outsiders. Our identity is not merely who we are, it’s what was given to us, and how we carried that into the world. What we eat says a lot about who we are, and that is culture, and culture will always be a part of the identity of each and every one of us.

We normally focus on love as the message of the modern prophet, Martin Luther King, Jr. But he also suggested that to forgive was the highest form of love. There always comes that moment in life when we are offered the choice to act with vengeance or act with forgiveness toward someone we perceive has done us wrong. No one escapes these moments because the conflict between right and wrong is the context of our living. Early on in my experience I was forced to make such a choice when someone threatened my life in a church fight. I will share that incident and the lessons I learned from it that have served as my guides over the subsequent decades.
