Please join host Amir Oren for the first of a two-part interview with Ace IAF Fighter Pilot, Brig. Gen. (Res) Relik Shafir.

Gen. Shafir is a member of the select company of IAF fighter pilots with a distinguished record of an “Ace,” having downed at least five enemy planes in dogfights and participating in important airstrikes. He flew A-4, F-4, F-15 and F-16 fighter jets, as well as CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopters.

One year after being one of eight F-16 pilots who destroyed Iraq’s Osirak nuclear reactor in June 1981, he led his fleet in an attack on Syrian surface-to-air batteries and evened the SAM-vs-Aircraft score.

Among his many achievements, Shafir commanded the IAF Flight Academy, as well as a Fighter Wing and a key airbase.

The jury is still out on the relative success of President Recep Tayep Erdogan in his efforts to improve or at least maintain Turkey’s position in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Levant, going into the G-20 conference and its side talks in Rome last weekend.

Apparently, Erdogan managed to avoid further friction and emerged from his meetings with Presidents Biden and Macron and other leaders with positive atmospherics, but on substance new agreements are yet to take shape. First aid is being administered, in painful military and diplomatic situations, but no radical treatment leading to recovery has been outlined.

So where does Turkey stand today vis-a-vis the United States, Russia, Syria and Greece, among other forces demanding Erdogan’s attention?

When the International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi visited Washington for talks at the State Department and on Capitol Hill last month, he devoted only part of his presentation to the questionable future of the Iran nuclear deal; while North Korea and the global climate crisis loomed equally large on his horizon.

Perhaps that is because the Vienna-based agency’s portfolio is limited to fact finding, verification and monitoring – but that is too narrow a scope to determine both conventional and non-conventional regional implications of the Islamic Republic’s nuclear activities on the Mideast.

The low turnout was a self-fulfilling prophecy. Not much will change in the new parliament, and coalition negotiations seem sure to drag on for many weeks.

But regardless of the make-up of the next government, one feature does suggest itself: most Iraqis, while arguing about everything else, have had enough of foreign involvement in their affairs. Whether it is the Iranians or the Americans, Iraq wishes to handle its affairs on its own.
