With the vote count in Israel’s parliamentary elections formally over and published in the Official Gazette, the focus has shifted to the President’s House in the nation’s Capital where Reuven Rivlin - due to retire in three months - consults with the 13 parties elected to the incoming Knesset, Hebrew for Parliament, in order to settle on a nominee able to form a new government.

Several candidates are jockeying for power - and if they all fail the country will be subjected to a 5th election campaign in a little over 2 years.

The only certainty following Tuesday elections in Israel is that uncertainty still reigns supreme in Jerusalem.

Israel has joined the ranks of such crisis-ridden democratic systems as Italy, or the 1950’s Fourth Republic in France.

The House of Saud had more than three months to prepare for a new reality of its American connection ever since Donald Trump lost his bid to stay in the White House, but the blow it suffered was nevertheless painful.

US President Joe Biden has opened a new chapter in the relationship between Washington and Riyadh.

First, Biden withdrew political and military support from Saudi offensive operations in Yemen, allowing only defensive actions to protect targets within the Kingdom. Then he released an intelligence report pinning the responsibility for Jamal Khashoggi’s murder on the Crown Prince and de-facto ruler, Muhammad bin Salman. While stopping short of punishing MBS personally, Biden is in essence intervening in the internal affairs of Saudi Arabia and its regime.

The re-emergence of the Democratic Party as the ruling power in Washington is a challenge to the foreign and even domestic policies of the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah a-Sisi.

Then-Gen. Sisi ousted former President Mohammad Morsi because he was too close to the Moslem Brotherhood, whose rise was partly related to the Obama-Biden Administration’s hostility toward his own predecessor, Hosni Mubarak.

Sisi’s conclusion was that he had to diversify Egypt’s strategic ties particularly with Russia, which is ‘less shocked’ by human rights problems and is now a rising power in the region; as opposed to the United States, which even under the Trump administration wished to lessen its involvement. Now Sisi is facing Biden amid a host of issues, such as Libya, Syria, terrorism vs. human rights, Iran, arms sales, the Eastern Mediterranean, Israeli-Palestinian peace and the Ethiopian Dam.

This week marks the 30th anniversary of the end of the first Iraq War.

A coalition headed by the United States and including Saudi, Syrian and Egyptian forces defeated Saddam Hussein and imposed limits on his power. Following the eruption of war again 12 years, Saddam was this time captured and executed, Iraq was occupied and its fragile domestic equilibrium shattered.

After almost two decades, the country has yet to find the right balance between its Shi’ite, Sunni and Kurdish communities and the competing outside forces - primarily Iran and the United States.
