Some seven weeks have elapsed since the second general election in Israel this year. Despite outgoing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s failed attempt to form a new government in Jerusalem, his chief rival former IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz does not seem any closer to fulfill the appointed task.

Does this mean that we may find ourselves, here in Israel, heading yet again towards a third round of national parliamentary elections?

Syria has been a battle ground, in which various conflicts and forces have intertwined. Along with the civil war, there is the age-old confrontation between Turkey and the Kurdish organizations fighting for aspired independence, global and regional power-struggles for dominance, and Jihadist groups vying to assert Islamic control over territory as a launching pad for further expansion. The latest example, of course, was the successful American operation that brought about the demise of the self-proclaimed Caliph of Daesh, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

The crisis in northeastern Syria has for a while pushed from the headlines another regional point, the Saudi-Iranian relationship. Israel’s Finance Ministry is projecting a significant slowdown in economic growth of 1-2% – following a rapid 5% growth during the first quarter. Israel’s overall estimated growth during the first half of the year (between 3.2 and 3.4%) is still healthier than many other int’l economies – but there has also a slight increase in unemployment in recent months. The national deficit is rising - as exports are impeded due to the strengthening shequel, whose gains against the US dollar this year made it one of the world's strongest currencies.
