As Russia’s war in Ukraine enters its 11th month with no real prospect of ending this winter, the issue seems one of perspective: the gloomiest predictions of conflict spreading into other European nations and drawing NATO into actual fighting.

International assistance in equipment and training were proven wrong, or at least premature; while hopes for a swift conclusion of combat operations and transition into negotiations were also dashed.

So, what is in store for the world in the foreseeable future? Are prominent powers and the international organizations they lead being realigned to reflect the chaotic reality of Russia stuck in its invasion adventure, China on a steady rise but facing domestic dissent and the United States looking eastward while trying to hold the fort in Europe? When Africa emerged from its intense period of de-colonization in the late 1950’s and 1960’s, Israel was the most helpful nation assisting the emerging governments and societies to develop their agricultural and industrial resources.

In return, Israel was the recipient of goodwill and some diplomatic support, but under Arab pressure these relations proved too fragile. Now, however, when the Arab world gradually normalizing its attitude towards the Jewish State, countries such as Chad and Sudan no longer fear conducting their contacts with Jerusalem out in the open, including high-level visits.

In its first two years in office, the administration of US President Joe Biden was reluctant to threaten Iran with military action, should diplomatic moves to stop its progress toward nuclear weapons fail.

Lately however, out of obvious frustration at Tehran’s refusal to revive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action that was revoked by then-President Donald Trump five years ago, American officials have gone back to using the phrase “everything is on the table.”

Joint military exercises with Israel, such as the unprecedented Juniper Oak, and tabletop simulations of operations are supposed to bring home to the Ayatollahs the effectiveness of a massive strike, should one be decided on in either Washington, Jerusalem or both. Last spring, Israel came under attack by a series of terror acts in population centers.

The perpetrators usually came from Palestinian towns and villages in the northern part of the West Bank, formally under the Palestinian Authority - but in fact only lightly supervised by its security forces.

The Israeli response was to launch the ongoing Operation Waves Breaker, with raids of hotbeds of terror planning and preparation, that has brought about clashes and casualties.

The political opposition to last year’s government is now in power in Jerusalem, and facing demands to make good on its pledge to run a more effective campaign to defeat and deter plots against helpless civilians.

How successful is this campaign, and what would be the implications in Jerusalem, the West Bank, Gaza and Israel-proper, if the result is an escalation rather than calm?

Please join host Amir Oren for the second of a two-part interview with former IDF Ground Forces Head Major General (Reserves) Guy Tzur.

Major General (Res.) Guy Tzur came up through the ranks of the IDF Armor Corps, commanding troops on all levels from platoon to division and directing the tanks’ doctrine department between command assignments.

He fought in Lebanon and Gaza, studied in Great Britain at the Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS), was in charge of planning for the General Staff.

Culminating his career with promotion to the Commanding General of the Ground Forces, he worked to bring Israel’s Armor, Infantry and Artillery in line with new technologies and civil-military considerations favoring the Air Force and the Intelligence Corps in investments and operations.

When US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Israel, earlier this week, one of his top agenda items was obviously Iran’s nuclear program.

Israeli officials have publicly claimed that they were successful in making the case to the administration of US President Joe Biden against re-entering the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, revoked by former President Donald Trump. Blinken argued that the agreement was about to be revived last fall, but then Iran changed course to continually accumulate fissile material; while the American response has been to keep all options “on the table” in reference to a possible military option should diplomacy fail.

Once upon a time, at the height of the Cold War, regional alliances were easily pictured.

On one half of the court stood the United States, with Turkey as a NATO member, Iran as the guardian of the Persian Gulf and Israel as the strongest power in the Eastern Mediterranean. Also on this list - Jordan, Saudi Arabia and at times weak Lebanon.

On the other side - the Soviet Union with the more radical Arab states, such as Iraq, Syria and South Yemen. Egypt moved towards the Western camp just as Iran moved out of it.

That was then, but now it is much more difficult to freeze-frame the state of alliances in the Middle East. Israel is of course a stalwart American partner, and so is Egypt under the current regime, but can Turkey and Saudi Arabia be safely said to belong there? And are Iran and Syria friends with each other, or mere Russian clients? And what is China’s role in this game?
