God had been telling Israel for centuries that he would send a messenger that would announce the coming of Messiah, and that coming would be a fearful thing for the straying house of Israel. But further, with a call to repentance the promised advent of the restoration would arrive with Messiah. Thirdly, all of this would be cast from the same mold that shaped Israel's first exit from Egypt and would be a new exodus from bondage.
