On The Way

Jesus and Children

Listen Later

In today's theme, let's remember when mothers took their children to be blessed by Jesus. The disciples wanted to stop them, but Jesus rebuked them, saying: “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God, Marcos 10:14.

Although children were desired in the ancient world, especially boys, birth, and childhood were not easy in the predominantly male culture. The risks of death were high for mothers during childbirth and for newborn babies and children. Many cultures used traditional medicines and amulets to protect these vulnerable people against supposed malevolent forces.

Children occupied a lower social position. Similar to that of slaves, according to Galatians 4:1 and 2. In the Greco-Roman world, those who were deformed or undesirable would be exposed or even tossed in a river. Boys were valued over girls; sometimes, girl babies were left to die among the elements. At times, these abandoned babies were “rescued,” only to be raised and sold as slaves.

It must have been an inspiring scene, Jesus taking the little children in his arms and blessing them one by one. The expression “let it come to me” also contains a very precious lesson. Because it was customary for children to be taken by their mothers so that the Rabbis could bless them. Jesus does not send the children to the rabbis; He does not send them to the Pharisees, for He knows that these men would teach them to reject their best Friend, the Lord Jesus. The truth is that any religious leader who does not have his life centered on Christ can lead the little ones astray.
