Even as Jesus has been teaching his disciples, he now sends a large group of them out on mission—from Jesus’ perspective, teaching and training go hand in hand. When they return, Jesus tells them that their joy is not ultimately rooted in their success but in their identity. As disciples, we have a mission that’s rooted in our identity, and we need to understand both. A mission without an identity produces legalism, while an identity without a mission produces laziness.
