4/20/25 Jesus Has Authority Over Sin & Death (Acts 2:22-39)
Rev. Andrew Brackmann, Bridges Alliance Church
Jesus has ultimate, universal authority because of His resurrection.
.
- Jesus has authority over sin.
(Ac 2:27; Lk 5:8; 1 Pet 2:22; Heb 4:15; 2 Cor 5:21)
Jesus was sinless…
…so He has authority over sin.
- “You can only serve 1 master” (Mtt 6:24)
- “Anyone who sins is a slave to sin” (Jn 8:34)
Our sin: leash vs. chair (Rom 6:23; 1 Cor 15:55)
- Jesus has authority over death.
(Ac 2:24, 26-27; Jn 10:18)
- Jesus had authority to choose death, not deserve it unavoidably. (Ac 2:23; Jn 10:18)
- Death rejected the sinless Jesus after he entered it. (Ac 2:24)
- Jesus is free from the trappings of death
- (Ac 2:24, 31) no agony of death
- (Ac 2:27, 31) no decay
- God raised Jesus into eternal life. (Ac 2:24, 31-32)
- He died to fulfill God’s just judgment against sin. (1 Pet 3:18)
Death ‘qualified’ Jesus to save us from the penalty of our sin. His resurrection validates His moral innocence, divine power, and ultimate, universal authority. (Ac 2: 32-33, 36; Rom 8:1-2; 1 Cor 15:17, 55)
- Ps 110:1(most quoted OT passage in NT)- “enemies a footstool”
- We can thrive in life now and rejoice in life after death. (Ac 2:25-28)
What is your response to Jesus’ authority? (Ac 2:37-39)
