The eighth lecture given at the 72nd Free Church School in Theology held at Carronvale House, Larbert. This lecture is entitled 'The Minister's Self-Watch' and was delivered on Thursday 10th September 2026.

Jesus in Psalm 57:4-5

Revelation 20:4 "And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years." King James Version

The sermon challenges believers to examine the spiritual condition of their households by asking what would be visible if Jesus visited their homes. Drawing from the story of Hezekiah in 2 Kings, the preacher urges families to prioritize Christ, unconditional love, regular Bible study, and persistent prayer as foundational elements of domestic life. It emphasizes the necessity of godly discipline, order, and peace within the family structure to counteract societal influences and raise children in the fear of the Lord. The message highlights that forgiveness and grace must be actively practiced at home so that children can understand God's mercy and develop a lasting faith. Difficult world and difficult times. But we have the word of God. We can pray always and praise the Lord in all things. We have the Bible. James 1 teaches us to trust the Lord at all times. Pray and praise Him at all times. Our source of strength and power. We have wisdom from the Lord. James 1:5-7. Our stability. Jesus is our Savior and Wisdom.

This sermon examines the decline of Samuel's sons, Joel and Abiah, to illustrate how subtle compromises lead to moral corruption. It emphasizes that spiritual grace cannot be inherited through lineage or upbringing, as only God can regenerate a heart. The preacher warns against the insidious nature of covetousness, which often hides behind respectability and slowly distorts justice for personal gain. By contrasting the failures of human leaders with the perfect faithfulness of Jesus Christ, the message directs listeners to trust solely in divine grace rather than earthly influence or religious heritage. By examining passages such as 1 John 2 and Titus 1:16, the text demonstrates that one can profess faith while simultaneously denying Christ's true nature, unique mediatorial office, and finished work. The speaker contends that Roman Catholic teachings on transubstantiation, the veneration of saints, and the re-sacrifice in the Mass effectively rob Jesus of His offices and sole headship over the church. This theological analysis serves to refute objections that the Pope cannot be the Antichrist because he verbally affirms Christ's divinity. Finally, the message urges believers to examine their own lives for similar indirect denials through hypocrisy and unrepentant sin, pointing to Christ's ongoing intercession as the sole source of hope.

WHEN YOU'RE WALKING IN HIGH COTTON. [DON'T FORGET GOD WHEN LIFE GETS GOOD] Deuteronomy 8:10–18 KJV This message is named after an old Southern expression describing a season when life is going well and blessings are plentiful. In Deuteronomy 8, Israel stood on the edge of the Promised Land after forty years in the wilderness. God was about to replace their wandering with abundance, but Moses warned them of a danger they might not expect: prosperity could cause them to forget the God they depended upon in adversity. There are three important truths from Deuteronomy 8: 1.remember where God brought you from, 2.be careful what you do when you get there, and 3.never forget who owns the cotton field. Every ability, opportunity, possession, answered prayer, and blessing ultimately comes from the hand of God. Sometimes the greatest test of faith is not how we respond when everything goes wrong, but how we live when everything goes right. Whether we are struggling through a wilderness, waiting for a harvest, or walking in high cotton, we still need God. And above every earthly blessing stands the greatest blessing of all—salvation through Jesus Christ. A person can gain everything this world offers and still lose his soul. Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, rose again, and will save everyone who calls upon Him by faith. When you're walking in high cotton, enjoy the blessing—but never forget the Blesser.

We are reminded that true worship must be offered to God in spirit and in truth, or it is not acceptable to Him. The message teaches us from John 4 and Isaiah 1 that not all religious activity, emotion, prayer, praise, or outward worship pleases God, especially when the heart is disobedient, unfaithful, or hiding sin. We are shown that real worship is not a performance, emotional excitement, tradition, storytelling, or self-focused religion, but honest reverence, love, obedience, and adoration directed toward the true God revealed in Jesus Christ and His Word. The sermon calls us to be open and honest before God, reject false and fleshly worship, know Christ personally, and worship the Father with a clean heart, in the truth of Scripture, and by the Spirit of God.
