Jesus Himself Gets a Drink
The Gospel is John 4:5-42
We can contrast the story of Nicodemus and Jesus, and the story of the woman at the well. Nicodemus was of high status, and the woman was of an ethnic and religious group despised by Jews and likely shunned by her own community.
Nicodemus didn’t see Jesus for who He was, but the woman at the well did see Him. He was full of himself, but she was empty and vulnerable.
Jesus constantly wants His Spirit to flow through us to others, but this flow often is blocked in us or those to whom the flow of Spirit could flow. This flow quenches Jesus’ thirst as well. Jesus Himself gets a drink!
People filled with this flow of living water move away from any need to protect their own power. This flow of love is all that they need, and transcends all thoughts and boundaries.
God gave His only Son so that all people might drink from the living water, and allow the living water to flow from Him and into our soul. We need to be open, not full of ourselves, to receive this flow of Spirit, of Divine Energy, of Life itself. This gives Jesus a drink as well as ourselves.
We can be observant of our own psychological blockages, often felt in our bodies, that hinder the flow of grace and mercy. We can notice when we are holding back, “sucking in”. Prayer brings us back into alignment with the Divine flow, and we should pray until we find “Yes” and our pettiness abates, and we let grace happen to us and through us.
