The religious leaders are envious of Jesus and threatened by him so they've come again with trick questions hoping to change the public view of him. This is when they ask if it is lawful to pay taxes to Caesar. Jesus' answer to their veiled questions, even from the "experts," served to temporarily silence them and expose their shallowness and lack of understanding about spiritual things.
