  • 66-JBricks Creator Yitzy Kasowitz
Jbrick is run by a husband and wife team. Yitzy, with a background in fine wood working and engineering and currently professionally employed as an Expert LEGO® Builder, designs the custom LEGO® sets. His wife Channie, who has a degree in finance, is the business manager.

Yitzy has always dreamed of creating Jewish custom LEGO® sets. After our first product, a 3-in-1 Menorah set, sold out in just one week after launch, we were inundated with requests for more. With nothing else like it on the market, we realized that the demand for high quality Jewish toys is huge! Because we are committed to designing the highest quality sets, we only use genuine LEGO® parts.

Our goal is to bring children and adults closer to their Jewish heritage through our fun products. As a father of three and a martial arts instructor, Yitzy understands the importance of connecting with learners using visually stimulating, exciting, and hands-on techniques. Jbrick uses genuine LEGO® elements for all our builds, and it is exciting for children to open a new toy knowing it's a quality, brand name product. With Jbrick custom LEGO® sets, children will receive detailed color instructions that will teach them advanced LEGO® building techniques. Be it a 3-in-1 Menorah for Chanukah or a 2-in-1 Seder Plate for Passover, our kits will occupy the recipient for hours while they build and rebuild each of the models. What's more, once built, the completed model will be a piece of art that can be displayed proudly year round.

At Jbrick, our vision goes beyond creating Jewish Custom LEGO® sets. We want to use Yitzy's building skills to create large scale Jewish Custom LEGO models, such as a replica of the Beit Hamikdash (Holy Temple) to LEGO® minifig size, about 1/35 scale, a replica of the kotel, or Noah's Ark.

The more this business grows, the more we will be able to create new fun and exciting custom Jewish custom LEGO® sets and models that will not only enhance Jewish learning, but will make it really fun too!

Please feel free to let us know what YOU would like to see jbrick create. We love feedback!

  • 65-Heidi Gesell Bank Cherokee's CEO
At BankCherokee, we believe that community starts with family; I am proud to be the third generation of my family to lead our independently-operated bank and to continue the tradition of work my grandfather started nearly 100 years ago.

I began my career at First National Bank of St. Paul and joined BankCherokee in 1983. I have served in many banking capacities. In my current role as president and CEO, I provide vision and direction for BankCherokee, ensuring the organization, our employees and the local small businesses we serve continue to thrive. Since moving into my leadership role in 1996, the bank’s assets have increased by nearly 75 percent.

I am personally committed to being an innovator in the Twin Cities’ business community and the neighborhoods BankCherokee serves. My work has resulted in numerous local business and finance awards including Finance & Commerce “Top Women in Finance” award (2007), as well as Minnesota Business Magazine’s “The (Real) Power 50” award (2015).

Giving back to the community is important to me as well. Over the years I have provided financial expertise and leadership to numerous nonprofit organizations. I served on the board of Neighborhood House on the west side of St. Paul; was board member, executive committee member and finance committee chair for United Way of St. Paul area; finance committee member for the Girl Scout Council of St. Croix Valley; and founding member, treasurer and president of the Rotary Club of West Saint Paul/Mendota Heights. Currently, I serve on the boards of Friends of the St. Paul Public Library, F. R. Bigelow Foundation and the Minnesota Bankers Association.

  • 64-Vegan Expert Caryn Hartglass
Caryn Hartglass is a native New Yorker and
at 15 years old she announced to her family that she wanted to be a vegetarian. There was little information available about vegetarian nutrition at the time and her parents were very concerned for her health. Caryn’s mother took her to the family physician. The physician’s arrogant and patronizing demeanor catapulted Caryn further into the world of vegetarianism. The part of the doctor’s diagnosis that was the most illogical was when he insisted that eating meat was beneficial for animals, because more were given the chance to live. He also said it was healthy to eat meat.
Interestingly, Caryn’s persistent stomach ailments, anemia and the premenstrual moodiness she was experiencing at the time all disappeared with the plant-based diet.

Meat is so delicious, in fact, that we’re not going to stop eating it.
What if there was a way to eat real and clean MEAT without hurting any animals?
    Cultured in a replicated environment.
Grown in a completely different method than other cultured meats.
Tastes exactly the same. No animals harmed.

    That’s what we're working on.

  • 59-Pancreatic Cancer Action Network's Eric Doppelt
Eric Doppelt lost his Aunt Jane to Pancreatic Cancer this past September, but that has not stopped his fight to end this awful disease.

Three years ago, Erics aunt Jane was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
The diagnosis shook more than just Jane: the news of a tumor quickly spread from one person to another - friends and family alike were plagued by this awful discovery. It was devastating to hear that someone so innocent, and so compassionate, was given such an awful sentencing.
After the initial shock subsided, they quickly concluded that while they may not have been able to understand why it happened, they certainly didn’t have to accept it as a simple death sentence. They could fight back. So while Jane battled, they did too.
Jane’s tumor was discovered in the Summer of 2013. For the following year, she battled relentlessly. Jane underwent chemotherapy and radiation, and despite awful side effects, her smile never faded. Cancer could never steal her smile.
Jane underwent surgery to remove the tumor, and with chemotherapy treatments, she lived cancer-free.

The dark, grim future faded, and life was simpler. But then, in the Winter of 2015, multiple tumors appeared. Her cancer had spread. Jane battled these tumors with a similar vigor - she failed to relent. But these tumors were different. They couldn’t be beat.

Jane passed away on September 24th, 2016.

She left behind a wide-reaching network of heart-broken friends and family: the same group who joined hands together three years ago; the group who promised to rewrite the future of pancreatic cancer; the group who refused to accept the statistics; who knew that a diagnosis wasn’t the end of a story. This group was, and still is, Team Jane.
Through attending PurpleStride walks, advocating on Capitol Hill, raising both funds and awareness, and sharing their story - Jane’s story - they battled right alongside Jane. She lit the path which guided them, and they followed in her footsteps Waging Hope!
Yet now, they are all at a loss for words. Their leader, their trailblazer, their sweet Jane, is no longer leading them. But this does not mean they will stop. If anything, now more than ever, they continue on and fight back… with a vengeance.
So with Jane on their minds and in their hearts, Team Jane endures with both sadness and determination. They will no longer fight with her, but will fight for her.
So come join them. Be a member of Team Jane at a PurpleStride, or donate money to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network which aspires to rewrite the future of pancreatic cancer. They aren’t done fighting, and hopefully, neither are you.

  • 58-Pancreatic Cancer Action Network's Founder Pam Acosta Marquardt
Purple was my mother, Rose Schneider’s, favorite color.
She was 68 when she passed from pancreatic cancer, just six months after her doctor told her to get her affairs in order.
After her death, our lives were shattered and I was heartbroken. But I was determined to not let her death be in vain.
As long as I can remember, purple had always had a presence in our lives…when I was a little girl, my room was lavender and white.
After my mother died, I went online to find the “organization for pancreatic cancer.” There’s a group for every disease, I had figured. I was shocked to find that one did not exist. There were no resources anywhere for the disease, only a “pancreas cancer chat room” on the Johns Hopkins Medicine website.
One of my favorite quotes is by Margaret Mead, who said: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
I had already met a small group of likeminded new friends through the Hopkins chat room – all committed to doing something…anything…to fight back against this beast of a disease that had torn apart our lives.
One thing was abundantly clear to me: We needed to start a movement. And I was ready to take action.
I remember one of the first things I wanted to do was to order ribbon pins so we could raise awareness, but what color?
I took the question to my new chat room friends and asked them what they thought of purple. To me, the color was regal and strong.
    They agreed.
Not long after, I went on to found the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network with the goal of it becoming a beacon of hope for those affected by pancreatic cancer – a place where people could use their anger and grief to make a world of difference. A place to join hands, raise our voices and put our boundless passion to work to change the course of this disease.
    ***
My mother grew up the youngest of six children raised by a single mother, living on the wrong side of the tracks and wearing hand-me-downs and shoes with holes in the soles.
She never felt like her life mattered.
I hope that she somehow knows that today the entire world associates purple with pancreatic cancer.
In my heart, purple represents Rose Schneider and many, many others with whom I have connected because of our shared pancreatic cancer bond.
I’ll forever see purple as I continue to honor my mother’s memory and work to carry out her legacy.
