聖誕節製作薑餅屋的習俗要回溯到十字軍東征的時代。

當時，「薑」是一種昂貴的進口香料，因此，人們只捨得用在像聖誕節、復活節...這種重要的節慶上。尤其是在寒冬的聖誕節，把薑加入蛋糕、餅乾這些節慶糕點當中，除了增加風味之外，也有祛寒的功用。

久而久之，薑餅就成了和聖誕節有關聯的點心囉。
