In this strange time I wanted to share something light, and I’ll keep sharing them as I find them. As you remember from our episode Sankofa we shared the ese The Cotton Plant and our scientific interpretation of it. We continually search for more relevant wisdom literature to inform our techniques and dexterity as we have our hands in the soil. We also enjoyed the opportunity to share some deeper science with our Siblings of the Soil.

As in life, however we came upon a challenge. Despite our thorough search we hadn’t found another ese quite like The Cotton Plant but we have found other ese that we are honored to share thorough the seasons.

MO 0:27Se so werefina, wosankofa yenkyi. It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten. We asked Che Axum his favorite plant related proverb and he said simply, sankofa. His answer was intriguing as you may remember, and if you haven’t listened, you should go back and fetch it.

MO 0:54As we look ahead, of course, we reflect on our surroundings and where we have been we Of course, quote ourselves. It has been in search of a refined and replicable agricultural strategy for us black folks that points towards an African natural farming practice. Where would we be without the act of sankofa? We went back because we knew we put forth an interesting definition somewhere. Of course, we posted on we posted it on our Instagram for the philosophical background episode. Again, we caught ourselves the Yoruba definition of agriculture is eko nipa iroko the art of cultivating the soil.

MO 1:46It now makes sense for the process of sankofa to no longer call the technique African natural farming here at Jìgìjìgì everything we do points towards a standardized geographically independent and replicable technique known as eko nipa iroko, the art of cultivating the soil or ENI for short. We appreciate you are loving sibling of the soil for helping us come to that evolution of thought. This is what family is for.

MO 0:00So, Peace and good morning. My name is Mason Olonade, a Mandela Jones. I’m the host of Jigijigi Africulture Podcast. I’m an urban farm journalist, passionate about the soil and the soul. I don’t have necessarily any experience selling what I’m advocating today, but I am in the process of developing my own value added products. I’ve compiled a whole bunch of resources. And I believe that the information is credible, reliable, it’s my honor to share it with you.

MJ 0:29and I’m, Mandela Jones, excuse me, for the past few years, I’ve been working with small farmers here and abroad, bringing more light to their growing spaces through marketing and through different production techniques.

MO 0:42So like I said, Before, we the flowery language is talking about empowering the attendees to germinate their dormant seeds entrepreneurship, and they may be nice and attractive. But what does that really mean? We want to be able to have an exercise, we’ll repair you all up individually in pairs. And then according to ward, county, and state to work on a cooperative growing model for some of the crops that you will be adding value to.

And we’ll go into that later. But first, we have a couple of assumptions about how we’re going to conduct this talk. The first one is that we intended this talk to people who are familiar with growing, going for production and have ideally sold produce already. Now, that doesn’t mean if you haven’t done any of those things that you should leave. Because we will have there are people here who have done something like that. And ideally, that person will be able to facilitate teaching you how to grow that particular thing to make it to that next particular thing, so that you can make some of these particular things. This workshop also isn’t talking about marketing, or how to grow, we’re just here to generate ideas right later on in the resources will show a very iterative process slide this, this will take time. And I’ll share some of my failures that I look at with admiration with all of you. We have a limited amount of time.

MO 0:26I’ve been sitting on this information we will discuss today for a while because it’s deeply personal and political nature. It forced me many times to look in the mirror and ask myself Are these my thoughts, my practices? By what standards? Have I determined if these thoughts have originated with me? What does it mean to agree with offshoots of poisonous thought roots?

MO 0:56I’ll be discussing an article published in the Journal of environmental health History titled, Organic Farming in Nazi Germany, the biology, the Politics, the Politics of Biodynamic Agriculture in 1933 to 1945 by Peter Staudenmeier. I had created a word A while ago, when I was experiencing this phenomenon a lot more “avindication” when you’re upset that your suspicions were correct.

MO 1:28From the introduction to biodynamic gardening by Monty Walden, he writes, biodynamics offers a simple way to nurture the soil beneath your feet, and reconnect with seasonal cycles and natural rhythms. Initially, some of the methods may seem a little strange, but overall bio dynamics has an unbeatable logic based on old fashioned farming values, familiar to many who are already gardening organically. healthy soil self sufficiency, putting more back into the soil that you take out and working with nature rather than against it. The difference lies in the use of biodynamic preparations, nine remedies based on plants and minerals that bring vitality to your soil and garden. These are unique to biodynamics. Best of all, connecting the natural cycles of the sky above your head with the natural cycles beneath your feet,

Starting in the summer I began thinking of the almanac and books like Planting By The Moon. I appreciate it astrology and I can at least rationalize how it makes sense. I extended my curiosity towards the astrological implications upon farming and general plant growth. I found books like Circle Gardening and other biodynamic texts. From Circle Gardening they say Earth signs influence development of roots, water signs of leaves, light or air signs of flowers, and warmth or fire signs of fruit and Seed.

However, this wasn't enough, I needed the abyss, the great Blackness to show me the deep thought. The deep thought and I heard it think , “On the inundation depended all of the hopes of the peasant. It affected the revenue of the government, both it by its influence on the scale of taxation, and by the greater or less prophets of the exploitation of grain and other produce, and it involved the comfort of all classes. The result of a favorable inundation was not confined to tangible benefits, it had the greatest effect on the mind of every Kemeti by long anticipation, the happiness arising from it, as the regrets on the appearance of a scanty supply of water, being far more sensibly felt than in countries which depend on rain for their Harvest or future prospects not being so soon foreseen, hope continues longer [with] the Kemeti, on the other hand being able to form adjust estimate of his crops even before the seed is sown or the land prepared for its reception.”

I had no idea, prior to the production of this episode that this episode would become an esoterracisms episode. I quote myself in saying “everyone knows about beekeeping by now, and surely no new information could about its importance or relevance to our soils and souls could be found.” How naive I was. How glad I am to have been that naive, that naivete is to be cherished and explored and it therefore as my opinion becomes my obligation, to share with my naivete brought me.

I will therefore be quoting liberally from the Tears of Re by Gene Kritsky. “The god Ra wept and the tears from his eyes fell on the ground and turned into a bee. The bee made his honeycomb and busied himself with the flowers of every plant and so wax was made and also honey out of the Tears of Ra.”

At Jigijigi we make a habit of consistently realizing Sankofa as a verb not just poignancy. That is not to say we haven't been rendered fully poignant by the work of our ancestors, it is to say that we will be using our proper tongue and calling us by our names and future quotations we're supplanted the misnomer Re with Ra, Egypt and Egyptian with Kemet and Kemeti.

Slight perusal let us out of our naivete and so we continue to share our spoils quoting again. Planting the variety of food crops raised in ancient Kemet required a vast knowledge of propagation techniques. Date palms were started by rooting basal offshoots whereas Sycamore figs, where as the Sycamore fig was started by rooting cut twigs. Other plans for grafted, started from bulbs, or planted as seeds. Further evidence of the Ancient Kemeti horticultural sophistication is demonstrated by their cultivation of the Sycamore fig. The wasp required for the pollination of the imported plant was not present in Kemet, which required their growers to induce ripening by scarifications scoring the rind of the immature fruit the wound caused the fruit to release ethylene gas, inducing the immature fruit to quickly grow and ripen into a parthenocarpic or unfertilized fruit. Did this knowledge also extends to an understanding of the role that these play played in food production that the Ancient Kemeti gardeners understand the concept of pollination?

The Salt 825 papyrus written approximately 2300 years ago indicated the Kemeti knew that there was a link between bees and plants. The papyrus reads that the bees quote busy themselves with the flowers of every plant. Other translations of the Salt Papyrus seemed to confirm the association...
