Last weekend I went up to Tokyo to do a session at the Tokyo Linux User Group (TLUG), and along the way I met up with my friend Matthew “Karamoon” Dons for a conversation in Yokohama. Matthew has been fighting cancer for over seven years now, and he provides a comprehensive update here in this discussion. He’s got an amazing story because he was given just months to live at the time of diagnosis! Check him out and follow his story at his website, YouTube, and Facebook.

We also talked about learning, doctors, nurses, hacker communities, the state of technology, AI, and other such interesting issues. Matthew and I used to meet and talk about these things all the time over some coffee and tea. We don’t live near each other these days so we’ll hopefully continue our conversations here via this podcast.

Here’s a fun story of when I met Linus Torvalds back in 2018. I told him about my experiences at Sun and OpenSolaris and also the time I spammed the Linux Kernel Mailing List (LKML).

I still have bitter/sweet feelings about Sun and OpenSolaris. It's a shame how it all ended for me. I went from working on the hottest project at Sun at the time and being Sun's #1 blogger (see: BSC front page) to losing those platforms overnight. That wrecked my career and forced me to reset — yet again. I have a lot of experience with train wrecks.

Here are some memories from meeting Atul Chitnis in December 2007. I shot the image of him here at the conference party at his home after the event. He was the first conference organizer who let me do a full session at a genuine Open Source conference. It was a huge opportunity for me. I was scared. He took me aside and calmed me down. I’ll never forget. He passed in 2013 but he still influences me today, especially when I think about how one person can change your path by simply offering an opportunity.
