Once upon a time

three little pigs left their home

to explore the big wide world

Their mother gave them a hug and said,

“Work hard and be safe,

and watch out for the Big Bad Wolf!”

The first little pig was a bit lazy

He found some yellow straw

and built a house very quickly

“It looks good,” he said

and he went to sleep

The second little pig liked to play

He found some wooden sticks

and built his house in a hurry

“That was easy,” he said

and he went to dance

But the third little pig was smart and hardworking

He bought heavy red bricks

He worked all day long

stacking them one by one

His house was strong and sturdy

Suddenly

a hungry wolf came out of the forest

He went to the house of straw

and knocked on the door

“Little pig, Little pig,

let me come in!”

The first pig shouted,

“No, no, no!

Not by the hair on my chinny chin chin!”

Then the wolf growled:

“Then I'll huff

and I'll puff

and I'll blow your house down!”

Whoosh!

The straw house fell down

The first pig ran to his brother's stick house

The wolf followed them

and knocked on the wooden door

“Little pigs, Little pigs,

let me come in!”

They shouted together,

“No, no, no!

Not by the hair on my chinny chin chin!”

So the wolf took a deep breath:

“I'll huff and I'll puff

and I'll blow your house down!”

Crack! Snap!

The stick house fell apart

The two pigs ran as fast as they could

to the brick house

where the third pig let them in

The wolf stood outside the brick house

He was very angry now

He took a giant breath

He huffed and he puffed

and he huffed and he puffed again

But the brick house stood strong

The wolf had a bad idea

He climbed up to the roof

and jumped down the chimney

But the smart little pig

had a big pot of hot soup on the fire

Splash!

“Ouch! My tail!”

cried the wolf

He jumped out of the pot

and ran far, far away

The three little pigs hugged each other

They learned that working hard

is the best way to stay safe

And they lived happily ever after.

Once upon a time

there was a Giant

who had a large and lovely garden

The grass was soft and green,

and beautiful flowers shone like stars

Every afternoon after school

the children used to go and play in the Giant's garden

They were so happy there

listening to the birds sing

But one day

the Giant came back from a long trip

When he saw the children playing

he became very angry

“What are you doing here?” he shouted in a gruff voice.

“My garden is my own garden—

no one can play here but me!”

The children ran away in fear

So the Giant built a high wall around the garden

and put up a sign that said:

“KEEP OUT”

He was a very selfish Giant

Then the Spring came to the whole country

There were little blossoms and little birds everywhere

But in the garden of the Selfish Giant

it was still Winter

The birds did not care to sing in it

as there were no children

and the trees forgot to blossom

The Snow covered the grass with her great white cloak

and the Frost painted all the trees silver

“I cannot understand why the Spring is so late,”

said the Selfish Giant

as he sat at the window and looked at his cold white garden

“I hope there will be a change in the weather.”

One morning

the Giant heard some lovely music

It was a little linnet bird singing outside his window

The Giant looked out

and saw a most wonderful sight

The children had crept in through a little hole in the wall

And sitting in the branches of every tree

was a little child

The trees were so glad to have the children back

that they had covered themselves with blossoms

But in one corner

it was still Winter

A little boy was standing there

He was too small to reach up to the branches of the tree

and he was crying

The Giant's heart melted

“How selfish I have been!” he said.

“Now I know why the Spring would not come here.”

He opened the door

and went out into the garden

The children were frightened and ran away

and the garden became Winter again

Only the little boy did not run

for his eyes were full of tears

The Giant came up behind him

took him gently in his hand

and put him up into the tree

And the tree broke at once into blossom

and the birds came and sang on it

The little boy stretched out his two arms

and flung them round the Giant's neck

and kissed him

When the other children saw that the Giant was not wicked any longer

they came running back

and with them came the Spring

“It is your garden now, little children,”

said the Giant

He took a great axe

and knocked down the wall

Years went by

The Giant grew old and weak

But he was happy

watching the children play

He always said

“I have many beautiful flowers,

but the children are the most beautiful flowers of all.”

Once upon a time

in a beautiful kingdom far away

lived a princess named Turandot

Turandot was very beautiful

but her heart was cold as ice

She did not want to marry anyone

She sat on a high throne of frost

and made a strict rule

“If you want to be my friend,” she said,

“you must answer three riddles.

If you answer wrong,

you must go away forever.”

Many princes came

but the riddles were too hard

The kingdom became quiet and sad

Everyone was afraid of the Ice Princess

Then came a brave prince named Calaf

He saw Turandot sitting alone

He did not see a mean princess

He saw a lonely girl who needed warmth

“I will try,” said Calaf bravely

Turandot looked at him with cold eyes

“Here is the first riddle:

What is born every night

but dies when the sun comes up?”

Calaf smiled and said,

“That is easy—it is Hope!”

The ice on the throne cracked a little

“Second riddle,” said the Princess,

“What is red and warm

and makes you brave?”

Calaf put his hand on his chest:

“It is the blood within a kind heart.”

The ice cracked more

“Third riddle,” whispered Turandot,

“What is ice on the outside

but has a fire hidden inside?”

Calaf looked into her eyes:

“It is you, Princess Turandot!”

The ice melted away!

But Turandot was scared

“I do not know how to love!” she cried

Calaf spoke gently:

“Do not be afraid—

I will give you a riddle too.

My name is a secret;

if you can guess my name by morning,

I will go away.”

That night

no one in the kingdom slept

They waited for the sun

The Princess thought and thought

Finally the sun rose

Turandot ran to the Prince

She looked at his warm smile

and she understood

“I know your name,” she said softly,

“your name is...

Love!”

The bells rang

and the kingdom was happy again

The cold winter was over

and spring had come at last

One morning

The owl handed him

a heavy bag of magic gold coins

"Here are eighty-six thousand four hundred coins,"

said the owl

"You can buy anything you want today—

but remember,"

The owl leaned closer:

"Any coin you do not spend by night

will turn into gray dust.

You cannot keep them."

Timmy took the bag home

"I am rich," he thought,

"I have so much gold—I can relax now.

I will spend it later."

He lay on the soft grass

and took a long nap

He heard his friends laughing outside

but he did not move

When the sun went down

Timmy finally woke up

His friends ran to him

their faces glowing with joy

"Timmy," they said,

"We bought huge ice creams

and we saw a double rainbow—

it was magic!"

Timmy grabbed his bag

"I want ice cream and rainbows too!

I have lots of gold!"

He opened the bag

But the bag was light

All the shiny gold coins

had turned into gray dust

The wind blew the dust away

Timmy cried:

"Wait, come back!"

But the rainbow was gone

and the day was over

He realized that all his gold

could not buy back the sunset he missed

The next morning

the bag was full of gold again

Timmy did not sleep

He jumped out of bed

He ran to his mom

and bought a morning hug

He ran to his friends

and bought a day of adventure

He used every coin

to make a happy memory

That night

the bag was empty

but Timmy smiled

He learned that the coins are time—

once they are gone

they never come back

The summer sun

was burning hot

A thirsty crow

flew to a spot

His throat was dry,

he felt so weak

He could not find

water for his beak.

Suddenly he saw

a tall gray jar

Standing in the garden,

not very far.

He flew right down

with a happy caw,

But when he looked in,

here is what he saw

The water was there

but very low

His beak could not reach;

it was too slow.

He tried to push

the heavy pot,

But it would not move

no, it would not.

The poor black crow

began to think:

“How can I get

that cool refreshing drink?”

He looked around

upon the ground

Some little pebbles,

smooth and round.

An idea came

into his head;

“I will use my brain,”

the smart crow said.

He picked up a stone

and dropped it in

Plop went the stone

with a little spin!

He dropped another

one by one,

Working very hard

under the sun.

Plop, plop, plop!

the stones piled high;

The water started rising

towards the sky.

Up came the water

to the very top

The crow did not stop,

no, he did not stop.

At last he drank

the water cool;

He was a smart bird

and not a fool.

Little by little

does the trick

A clever thought

is better than quick!

and squeezed the pig

He worked so hard

sweat dripped down

The clean fat pig

and walked out the door

What a great bath

The busiest night

for the soba shop below

The last customer left

the air was still and deep

The owner and his wife

were preparing to sleep

Then the door opened

a mother stepped inside

With two little boys

trying to hide

Their clothes were old

but clean and neat

"Excuse me, sir—

can we have a seat?

Just one bowl of soba—

would that be okay for three?"

The mother asked softly

very politely

"Of course," said the wife,

"please sit right here."

She brought them warm tea

and holiday cheer

The owner cooked one bowl

but here is the trick—

he added extra noodles

fast and quick

They shared the hot soba;

it tasted so good

The boys smiled happily

as they ate their food

The next New Year's Eve

they came back again

The mother looked tired

from work and from pain

"Again, just one bowl

is all we can buy,"

the owner added extra—

on the sly

They ate and they talked:

"We will pay our debt;

next year will be better—

do not forget."

The third year arrived

the boys grew so tall

They ordered one bowl—

the best meal of all

The owner put in

lots of noodles to share

The family was laughing

without any care

"Thank you for the soba,"

they bowed and they left

Leaving the owner

happy like a chef

Many years passed by

the shop was so bright

New Year's Eve came

on a cold snowy night

Two men in suits

and a lady so fine

walked into the shop

waiting to dine

The lady spoke up

with tears in her eyes:

"Do you remember us—

to your surprise?

We are the family

who shared one bowl;

your kindness gave us

a very strong soul.

Tonight we want three

of your best soba soup,

to celebrate life

with this happy group!"

The customers clapped

the bells started to ring

The warmth of the soba

made everyone sing

past musicians whose fingers rested on silent strings

Everything was quiet

soft

and strangely beautiful

Finally

he reached a small tower room

There on a bed of white roses

lay the princess

still as moonlight

yet shining softly

The prince felt calm courage in his heart

He sat beside her

and gently touched her hand

Warmth flowed between them

like a quiet promise

Her eyes slowly opened

bright as morning after a long night

The spell broke at once

The castle awoke

laughter and life returning room by room

When the princess stood
