Don’t Call Me Fake

‘Dr. D’ David Schultz may be one of the most controversial figures in professional wrestling. For those who don’t remember, in 1984 he was involved in an incident with ABC News reporter John Stossel. He shares the story on this week’s podcast and of course, has more details in his new book Don’t Call Me Fake: The Real Story of ‘Dr. D’ David Schultz. You can get a copy here:

Schultz is headed to SICW on Saturday, May 19 in East Carondelet, Illinois. Promoter Herb Simmons joins us on the podcast to talk more about the event, which features the Bruiser Brody Memorial Battle Royal and celebrates the 59th anniversary of Wrestling at the Chase.

Heading for the Cage

I’ve been a longtime fan of pro wrestling. And I’m proud to say I’ve been involved with some of the finest independent wrestling companies in southern Illinois. I’m extremely grateful for my current role as the ring announcer in Stride Pro Wrestling.

But now I find myself once again backed into a corner and having to defend not only myself but my 12-year-old daughter. You can hear the whole story on the podcast this week. But yes, I am stepping into the ring, this time surrounded by a steel cage against Roger Matheus on Saturday, May 26 at Pinckneyville High School.

Brotherly Love

It’s another episode of Wrestling Under the Influence. This week I’m joined by my buddy Dan Turnquist and we tackle 21st Anniversary by Two Brothers Brewing Company. Full disclosure, when I looked at the can, I thought the name of the beer was two brothers and that’s why I picked it. I figured we could talk about our favorite brothers in pro wrestling.

The actual beer we drank is the 21st Anniversary. However, we did just go ahead and talk about the brothers of wrestling we like the most. Some are related by blood, others are related by a storyline. However, as we discuss wrestling, in general, is a brotherhood, so it’s all good.

Ready for a Nerdgasm

What a weekend. It all started off Friday afternoon with a trip to Cape Girardeau, Missouri to interview Lou Ferrigno (you know, The Incredible Hulk). My buddy Tom Harness and I did that interview for our new show Another Round with Tom & Kevin. Lou was in town for the 13th annual Cape Comic Con.

Lou was a great guest and took time to talk with us before and after the interview. We appreciate his time and organizer, Ken Murphy, hooking us up. From there we stopped by the Broadway Biergarten for a 420 beer by Lagunitas. (It was 4/20 after all.)

Saturday we returned to Cape for the actual Comic-Con event and followed it up with Cape Championship Wrestling‘s Super Show II. Tom and I review the weekend on the way back to southern Illinois Saturday night. Check it out and also go watch that interview with Lou Ferrigno. Here’s the link. Thanks to everyone for the support.

“Hug the ones you love.”

I’m kicking off another new feature here on the My 1-2-3 Cents podcast called “Superfan”. I’ll be having conversations with fellow pro wrestling fans about their all-time favorite wrestler. The first installment is with Barry Karafa from Cape Championship Wrestling.

Barry is a HUGE “Roddy” Roddy Piper fan. The quote you see at the top of this post was handwritten by Hot Rod in a Christmas card he sent to Barry the December before Piper’s death. We talk about that card and other memorabilia Barry has honoring Piper. We also share childhood memories and how Piper influenced the world of professional wrestling. By the way, you can see more of Barry’s collection over on the My 1-2-3 Cents Instagram page.

Barry is also part of CCW. The company is in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and has their ‘WrestleMania’ event this upcoming weekend. CCW: Supershow II is part of the Cape Con weekend. You’ll see all the stars of CCW along with Legends like Dan “The Beast” Severin (former My 1-2-3 Cents podcast guest) and Tommy Dreamer. You can still get tickets to the Supershow.

I’m also a sponsored athlete (stop laughing) for COLLARxELBOW brand. Shop online and use the promo code MY123CENTS and you’ll save 10%.

Mania Moments

WrestleMania 34 is in the books. I take a few minutes and talk about some of my favorite highlights from this year’s show. What did you like the most about it?

Also, I look ahead to the upcoming Stride Pro Wrestling event (April 14) at Roadhouse Harley Davidson in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. There are lots of great things coming to Stride Pro Wrestling. We love Lane.

More than two years ago I got involved with Stride Pro Wrestling. One of the first people I met on that first show in March 2016 was Lane Austin. He was one of the referees that night (I think we actually had more than one that evening.) We became fast friends and have made it a tradition to hang out after shows and grab a bite to eat at Applebee’s or Steak ‘n Shake.

Lane is a great referee, but more importantly a great friend. He’s been battling diabetes most of his life and was recently hospitalized as a result of the disease. Now the guy who gives of himself so willingly is going to be the one we’re giving back to. On Saturday, April 7 Stride Pro Wrestling is putting together a big fundraiser in Lane’s honor.

I talked with Heath Hatton who is the man with the plan for Stride Pro Wrestling and one of Lane’s oldest friends. The benefit show is happening at 7 p.m. at the Carterville Community Center. You can get directions here. We’ll also have auctions, concessions and autographed pictures of Stride stars to raise money for our friend.

We know for sure Jay Spade will defend the Stride Pro Wrestling Heavyweight Championship against Tony Flood. Sam Hunter will be the guest on Striking Your Fancy and we’ll find out what’s next for Roger Matheus. Also, I know of at least one former Stride star returning (look close at the poster and you’ll figure it out too). It’s going to be a great night for a great guy. Simply put, we love you Lane. So please come out and support this show.

Wrestling Under the Influence

When I was in college I dreamed of attending WrestleMania X and having a beer. I picked ten specifically because that was the year I turned 21. So wrestling and beer have been a part of me for decades now. They’re a great tag team and now I’m finally kicking off a new segment on the My 1-2-3 Cents podcast.

Wrestling Under the Influence (name credit to Dennis Wyatt) will include a conversation between me and a fellow wrestling fan. We’ll share a beer and our memories on a point in wrestling that we tie into the beverage selected. On this first installment, it is Death by Coconut by Oskar Blues Brewery. Since coconut is in the name, I had to dedicate the beer to ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper and ‘Superfly’ Jimmy Snuka.

My fellow Craftbeerican and beginner pro wrestling fan, Tom Harness joins me for this conversation. We review the beer and talk about one of the most memorable wrestling angles from the 1980s.

Chicago to Dallas and all points in between

Chad and I have been to nine WrestleManias since 2006. Our first trip was a three-day weekend to Chicago for WrestleMania 22. From there, our trips became more involved and more fun. In this week’s episode, we talk about all nine trips and our favorite things from each.

If you’ve ever been to WrestleMania, you know it’s not just about the big show on Sunday night. There’s so much to see and do that’s wrestling related. And when you factor in WrestleMania host cities are ‘destination spots’ there’s all kinds of fun to be had.
