Tan Ah Ngan was born to a poor family in Si Kah Teng in 1933. She remembers working when she was nine, living through the Japanese Occupation and sorting rubber sheets after the war, before she married and had two sons. Life was difficult but she was always happy to work and friendly to people. She keeps herself busy five days a week at a daycare centre.
