Through the organisation, Pride Western Australia, as well as his four businesses, Gerry Matera is addressing prejudice and inequality against LGBTQIA+ and Aboriginal communities in some of Australia's largest organisations.
A Nyoongar traditional owner from Western Australia, and a gay man raised in a family of professional football players, Gerry's life experiences affected by depression and anxiety are fuelling his passion to drive social change and stamp out bigotry particularly in the construction sector.
One of Gerry's four businesses, the construction firm Marawar, was awarded the 2021 National Registered Aboriginal Business of the Year for driving significant growth and demonstrating ongoing engagement with the Aboriginal community.
The first Aboriginal person to join Pride WA in its 30-year history, Gerry chats to Rebecca Kent about 'rainbow-ticking' and 'black-cladding' and how Pride marches are lending themselves to difficult conversations that he doesn't at all mind having.
An International Women's Day special featuring three guests at the top of their fields using their experience and influence to recognise barriers women face at work, and change and challenge them.
International Women's Day is a timely reminder of how much further we have to go in real estate and as a nation.
In November 2020 the World Economic Forum announced Australia sits behind the developed world at number 44 on the forum's Global Gender Gap Index - one place ahead of Zambia.
Guests in this episode are Amy Gildea, managing director of international development - Asia Pacific, Coffey; Her Honour Andrea Tsalamandris, country court judge; and James Montague, head of office leasing - Queensland, JLL.
The Beyond Buildings podcast is hosted by Rebecca Kent
Vanessa Fowler’s sister Allison Baden-Clay was murdered by her husband, shattering her family and community.
Now she and her family are turning that devastating experience into a force for good, establishing the Allison Baden-Clay Foundation to help people recognise the early signs of domestic and family abuse. The goal is to eradicate what is often described as Australia’s pandemic.
Vanessa is joined by JLL’s head of human resources, Nicole Zipf, who explains the role of the workplace in stamping out domestic violence. Lydia King, a property management specialist, who leads JLL’s agenda in gender issues as part of its diversity and inclusion programme, moderates the discussion.
Alicia Maynard graduated from assistant on the tools in her father’s shed in country NSW to an engineer at high-profile organisations in the big smoke. In doing so, she was constantly challenging assumptions about what women could bring to a male-dominated workforce.
Now the general manager of sustainability and technical services at ISPT, Alicia chats to Lee McLaughlin, JLL's national account director for ISPT, about why diverse teams and companies perform better, how leaders can affect change on gender equality, and knowing your worth.
