  • Ep. 72 - Sam Scruton - An Introduction To The Life & Philosophy Of Sir Roger Scruton

Sir Roger Scruton was one of the most influential philosophers of the last century. His work spans nearly 40 books and thousands of articles and has been the intellectual heavyweight on issues as conservatism, theology, and politics.

In this episode, I speak to his son, Sam Scruton about what Sir Roger was like behind the books. I wanted to cover the topics that Sir Roger wrote prominently such as architecture, localism, hunting, and beauty.

I also wanted to discover what Sir Roger was like as father, what was his parenting style, how did he structure his day, did he really teach Sam Greek aged 6 similar to John Stuart Mill?

Sam shares personal anecdotes, touching stories, and lifts a lid on the one of Britain’s most respected philosophers.

  • Ep. 66 - Donald Robertson - How To Think Like Socrates: Ancient Philosophy For The Modern World

Donald Robertson is an author, ancient philosophy expert, and Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist.

In his latest book, "How To Think Like Socrates", Donald builds on his previous work on Stoicism and lifts the lid on Socrates, the world's greatest philosopher.
Given that Socrates lived 2500 years ago, what advice would he give out today? What would he conclude from our money and status driven culture? What would he advise us on our fears of death? What would be his thoughts on escaping the hedonic treadmill?
Donald expounds the Socratic method, it's purpose and how we can use it to enhance our lives and clarify our thoughts.
We discuss that, and so much more in this episode. Including Socrates's workout routine, why he walked around without shoes, if there is a connection between manual labour and deep thought, and if the unexamined life is truly not worth living.

  • Ep. 65 - Nick Ridley - Lessons & Stories From A Life Spent Training Dogs

Nick Ridley is a professional gundog trainer, photographer, and author. For several decades, he's written about working dogs for all the prominent fieldsports magazines. He also runs and operates a photography business and posts videos about his days spent shooting with his cocker spaniels on YouTube.

But why did he choose cocker spaniels? A breed that is harder to train and control than the reliable springer or Labrador? We discuss if cockers are the Land Rovers of the canine world, why they're unvalued in shooting compared to a peg dog - and yet need far more training, and why Nick doesn't pick up anymore.

Nick also shares his thoughts on dogs vs. bitches, how many dogs are the right amount of dogs, and why rough shooting is more akin to hunting.

We also discuss "Practical Gundog Training" which is the name of Nick's new book, coming out in July. All that and so much more, if you're interested in gundogs or fieldsports, this is the episode for you.

  • Ep. 63 - Professor Ken Dark - The Archaeology of Jesus' Nazareth

Professor Ken Dark is a British archeologist with honorary professorships from several European and American universities, has written over 11 books and multiple academic articles, and has directed and co-directed many excavations and survey projects on the 1st millennium AD.

From Roman and post-Roman Britain and the Byzantine Middle East to the Archeology of early Christian Israel, Ken is a global expert on all these matters.

In his most recent book, The Archaeology of Jesus’s Nazareth, Ken puts forward a popular account of what the town of Nazareth would have been like in the time of Jesus. He asks if Jesus was really a carpenter, or if it is a mistranslation. Ken discovered what many believe was Jesus’s childhood home, but was it?

We also discuss if the Empress Helena actually found the Cross, what was we learn from Jesus’s youth, the Christian Pilgrimage, why Nazareth was so different to it’s surrounding areas in that time, if the lack of certainty frustrates Ken, and why we still use BC/ AD given that most of the archaeology work undertaken is secular.

All that, and so much more. Enjoy the episode and please do give the show a five-star review.
