John 2:13-22

Introduction

We’re reading John not Matthew, Mark or Luke

a similar event (Matt 21:12–16; Mark 11:15-18; Luke 19:45–47)

a different focus

Jesus drives traders out of the temple (2:13-15)

because it’s not a place for trade (2:16)

and Jesus is zealous for his Father’s house (2:16-17, Psalm 69:9)

Jews demand a sign to prove Jesus’ authority (2:18)

Jesus gives a sign to prove it (2:19)

- not walls and stones (2:20)

- his flesh, blood and bones (2:21-22)

The Scripture and the word that Jesus spoke

consumed because of his zeal (2:17, cf. Psalm 69:9-11)

- with hope Psalm 69:1,13,29,35-36

destroyed by the Jews and raised up in three days (2:19,22)

Jesus is the new temple (2:21)
