  • John Dunn & Joel Larson: The Kings of LA’s Club Scene

In the early 1980s, John Dunn and Joel Larson joined forces to dominate Los Angeles’ nightlife, shaping the city’s club scene from Hollywood and Beverly Hills to the San Fernando Valley for over 15 years. Their influence spanned over 75 legendary venues, including Whisky A Go Go, Roxy Theater, Flippers, Voila, Le Hot Club, Cattle Barons, and PG’s.

On Friday and Saturday nights at Whisky A Go Go, the dance floor was packed with celebrities, rockstars, and the who’s who of LA, all drawn to the electric energy of their events. Joel Larson, the original drummer and founder of The Grass Roots, first met John Dunn at Flippers in the late 1970s, and together they created some of the biggest club and concert events in LA history throughout the 1980s.

Decades later, people still share their experiences across social media—many met their future spouses at these events, while others describe it as the most exciting time of their lives.

Now, for the first time, we’re telling the inside story—how it all came together, the wild deals, behind-the-scenes drama, and the drug-fueled dance floor mayhem that defined an era.
