  • Trump's Election Nightmare Could Mean Disaster for Iran | Episode 36

Welcome to day two of our Election Results coverage. Democrats didn’t just flip the House. They gutted it, renovated it, brought in an exorcist and then flipped it. They could end up with 253 House seats and 56 in the Senate, and three quarters of America will have a Democratic governor next year. In a word, this was a rebuke. Trump’s response? “I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!”

But I want to start with the story nobody is talking about yet. A week from now, it’s all anyone will be talking about: what’s next for the Iran war? Trump said the conflict would wrap up “probably right after the midterms.” Well, it’s right after the midterms. Tucker Carlson claims the administration may be days away from a nuclear strike on Pickaxe Mountain, and that set off a right-vs-right fight between Marjorie Taylor Greene and Laura Loomer. I don’t think Trump uses a nuke, but I do think escalation is coming. And with no more midterms and no reelection to worry about, he doesn’t have to answer to anyone.

Then we look at how the rest of the world is reacting, from Iran and Russia to Saudi Arabia, Israel and AIPAC. I go through international front pages, something I used to do at the CIA. And what will Democrats actually do with their majority? The incoming chair of the House Oversight Committee, Robert Garcia, put out a two-word statement: “Lawyer up.”

We also cover how House control played out on Kalshi, the Montana ballot measure banning corporate money in state politics, and the Democrats who won their races on next to nothing. One didn’t spend a dime on advertising. Another spent just $90,000 on her whole campaign. Finally, I give you my diagnosis of why this blue wave was so historic.

  • I Said Watch for a Blue Wave. It Was a TSUNAMI | Episode 34

Welcome to our Briefing Room Election Results special. Democrats have taken control of Congress, and it’s a much bigger win than anyone predicted. Statistically, it’s the Democrats’ most successful election since 1974. They’re on track for 55 or 56 Senate seats and a House advantage of as many as 30 seats. (I did tell President Trump that appointing me ambassador to Greece might have helped. Just saying.)

I break down the overall results, and then we get to Trump, who can’t take any of the blame for his hand-picked candidates losing, and losing BADLY. He says this wasn’t a defeat for him because he “wasn’t on the ballot.”

Then we get to the most insane results of the night. Texas’s 15th District, a seat Republicans gerrymandered to make safer, swung roughly 46 points to the left and elected Grammy-winning Tejano singer Bobby Pulido. Counties along the Texas-Mexico border swung as much as 76 points. Democrats won every statewide office in Texas, all the way down to land commissioner. Mississippi’s Senate race is the biggest nail-biter in the country, with the Democrat up by just 28 votes at 95% reporting. I also cover Abdul El-Sayed’s victory in Michigan (and Haley Stevens’ voting hat) and the “dummymander of the decade” in North Carolina. That’s where the House map went from 10-4 Republican to 10-4 Democrat, and the man running the House Republicans’ campaign arm lost his own seat.

  • Predicting the Midterms: Is the Blue Wave Real? | Episode 33

On today’s Election Day special of The Briefing Room, I start with a milestone: our episode “What Really Happened on October 7th” just passed a million views. That’s a fitting moment, right after the Israeli elections. I look at what a Gadi Eisenkot government would actually change, and at his surprise coalition deal with Arab parties that could push the opposition past 61 seats.

Then we head to the races that could decide the Senate. In Michigan, Haley Stevens lost her primary and spent three months as a loyal Democrat. Then on Halloween she endorsed Republican Mike Rogers. What do you get for burning down your career days before an election? In South Carolina, Lindsey Graham’s sister says national security “isn’t really her thing,” and she has a few choice words for her brother.

Down in Texas, Elon Musk has poured nearly $190 million into Ken Paxton’s campaign. Paxton is the attorney general who regulates Musk’s businesses. I ask whether James Talarico is finally the Democrat who turns Texas blue. In Iowa, a state Trump won by 13 points could elect a Democratic governor, thanks to a GOP ticket with some serious baggage. And in Alaska, we’ve got “Decoy Dan,” a mysterious operative named “Zane,” an FBI investigation, and a DOJ lawsuit to block certification. Did Mary Peltola’s people just hand Trump the story he wanted?

Stick around at the end for my Halloween costumes.

  • Netanyahu Loses Big Time. Will It Matter? Israel Election Results Arrive | Episode 32

Netanyahu’s coalition just lost its majority, so why might he stay in power for months? On this election edition of The Briefing Room, former CIA officer and whistleblower John Kiriakou breaks down the week’s biggest results at home and abroad.

We start in Israel, where Netanyahu’s bloc fell to about 50 seats, Arab parties posted record numbers, and “No one” became a top contender for prime minister. John explains the coalition math and why Netanyahu doesn’t have to win to stay in office. Then it’s on to Brazil’s shock result, as Lula wins a historic fourth term and Flávio Bolsonaro refuses to concede before leaving for the United States.

Back home, actual votes are in. Democrats are out-voting Republicans early in Florida, New Jersey has swung roughly 30 points, and Trump’s final campaign stops say a lot about how nervous the White House is. John also has an update on Matthew Cole, the reporter whose story helped send him to prison, as doubts about Cole’s Kushner allegations grow from Barak Ravid to Jon Stewart. Plus, a shouting match at the UN between Ambassador Mike Waltz and Cuba’s foreign minister, and a reported $1 billion cash offer from Saudi Arabia to get the Houthis to stop bombing its oil facilities.

  • The Reporter Who Sent Me to Prison Just Exposed Jared Kushner | Episode 31

Years ago, a journalist I trusted gave me up to the FBI, and I went to prison for it. Now that same reporter, Matthew Cole, is reporting that Russian and Dutch intelligence got inside Jared Kushner's personal phone. I'll walk you through the allegations, why this is a live problem with Kushner negotiating with Putin right now, and what I'd tell the sources who talked to him. (Spoiler: get a lawyer.)

Plus, I'm handing out our first-ever TrainVek Award to Vivek Ramaswamy. His attack ad starring Amy Acton's estranged mother was already a disaster, and then we learned his star surrogate was charged in a case where kittens died in a hot car. Did nobody on his team Google this woman?

We'll also cover Israel's Election Day, including Netanyahu's reported push for strikes on Iran, Ben Gvir's latest outrage, and the three coalition scenarios to watch. Then it's Lula's narrow win in Brazil, and a CIA contractor accused of leaking classified reports to help his girlfriend's career.

🗳️ Who should win the next TrainVek? Drop your nominations in the comments!

  • Meet the Man Set to BEAT Netanyahu on Israel’s Election Day | Episode 30

This election season is officially spiraling out of hand as massive campaign cash and international political maneuvers collide. Days away from Israel's high-stakes October 27th election, Benjamin Netanyahu is fighting a deadlock to hold onto power against a hawkish "centrist" challenger, while the Israeli government takes the absurd step of purchasing television ads directly targeted at American voters in Iowa. We pull back the curtain on this bizarre intersection of foreign influence and follow the dark money flooding into America's biggest midterm races. Finally, we analyze a highly controversial $4 million ad campaign from Vivek Ramaswamy that features his opponent Amy Acton's estranged mother and look at the critical personal context left out of the broadcast.

  • Riyadh Under Fire: The Major Escalation the Media Is Ignoring | Episode 27

The war between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis has escalated dramatically as Riyadh’s international airport was hit by missile strikes twice in forty-eight hours, leaving at least twelve dead and hundreds injured. As Saudi forces strike back hard with widespread bombings across Yemen, we analyze the silence from American media, break down how the White House might react, and look at whether this major escalation will pull the United States directly into a wider Middle Eastern war. We also react to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s sweeping order to investigate and prosecute IDF soldiers who blew the whistle on military conduct in the anonymous "NAZA" investigative documentary.

On the domestic front, we debunk the right-wing influencer hoax claiming Texas Senate candidate James Talarico was secretly institutionalized in Ohio, exposing the real political panic driving these campaign-trail conspiracy theories. We then go inside the West Bank to look at a remarkable 60 Minutes package detailing weaponized settler violence and the detention of Palestinian residents. Finally, after years of persistence on the show, we celebrate a major milestone as we have officially made contact with Angry Birds headquarters, before tackling the uncharted legal territory of two botched high-profile military executions.
