  • New patent for self-repossessing vehicles sparks controversy | iHeart's WHO Radio Des Moines, Iowa | 3/9/23
iHeart's WHO Radio asked John Rizvi to come on the air 🎙 in Des Moines, IA to discuss a recent patent application by Ford. Ford's patent application shows a vehicle that repossesses itself if the owner doesn't make car payments. John, known as the patent professor, explained how turning off air conditioning, locking you out of your car, and emitting an incessant unpleasant sound from the car radio until you call your bank are just a few options before repossessing the vehicle completely. John mentioned that the patent doesn't state the sound, as a good patent attorney keeps things broad, so it could be annoying.

John also talked about how the vehicle can call the police by itself in case the owner interferes in the repossession process. It's also possible for malfunctions to occur in the system, such as controlling the brakes, accelerator, lights, cruise control, and windows, leading to disastrous results. John advises vehicle owners to insist and get it in writing that Ford has removed all programming enabling them to repossess the vehicle by itself.

Although Ford says it has no current plans to deploy this technology, the patent's publication has caused quite an uproar. John urged Ford to develop good ideas that are good for society in general and also protect new ideas that he deems useful for society.

  • Winnie the Pooh serial killer movie sparks outcry of copyright infringement | iHeart's Talk Radio WLW Cincinnati | 2/24/23
WLW recently asked John Rizvi to come on the air 🎙 in Cincinnati, OH to discuss the recent ads for the Winnie the Pooh Kills Everybody movie. John, a patent attorney and professor, was able to explain how this was possible due to the copyright expiration of AA Milne's beloved Winnie the Pooh stories published in 1926.

He explained that once a copyright expires, anyone can do anything with the characters and that the estate is helpless in protecting them. He also discussed how Disney has taken Winnie the Pooh and added their own features such as the classic red t-shirt and changing the spelling of honey, but the director of this film was careful to only use the Winnie the Poo aspects that were in the original expired copyright.

John also discussed how trademarks can be renewed and don't necessarily expire, unlike copyrights which have a life of the author plus 75 years or 95 years total. He predicted that Disney has lobbied for an extension of copyright protection beyond 95 years, but it is unlikely to happen.

This interview was an eye-opening discussion on the power of copyright law and its implications for iconic characters like Winnie the Pooh.

  • Impact of artificial intelligence on copyrights and patents | KXYL Radio Brownwood, Texas | 3/3/23
KXYL recently asked John Rizvi to come on the air 🎙 in Brownwood, Texas to discuss patents, copyrights, and ChatGPT. John, known as the Patent Professor and author of two books on patents, spoke about the issue of whether a machine or computer can be considered an author, entitled to copyright protection. He referenced the "monkey selfie" case, in which a monkey took photos on a cell phone and the court held that a monkey is not considered an author for purposes of the Constitution. Similarly, a computer generated entirely by a machine cannot be entitled to copyright protection.

John also discussed the recent Zarya of the Dawn case, in which a machine was used to generate art with minimal human input. The Copyright Office held that there was no copyright protection for that art because the human interaction was extremely limited and there was no control. In contrast, with Chat GPT, a tool that allows the computer to write sentence content in response to natural language text, the author is permitted to edit, revise, and make changes to the final product, which involves human creativity.

John predicts that laws will change to address the use of artificial intelligence-generated work, an issue that many industries and education systems will be grappling with. Nonetheless, for educators and teachers, it may involve emphasizing writing assignments that do not involve the use of AI-generated work or focusing on handwritten essays to ensure analytical skills are developed.

  • Winnie the Pooh reimagined as Slasher Film sparks outrage | National Rich Valdes Show | 2/27/23
The national Rich Valdes Show recently asked John Rizvi to come on the air 🎙 to discuss the recent news of the upcoming Winnie the Pooh slasher film, "Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey". As a registered patent attorney and founder of The Patent Professor®, John was able to explain the legalities of copyrights and how they can expire, thus leading to the public domain and the ability for anyone to take an idea and do what they want with it.

John discussed how Disney still has exclusive rights to the version of Winnie the Pooh that they have created, but the original version of Winnie the Pooh created by A.A. Milne is now in the public domain. He also explained how this could lead to other beloved characters, such as Bugs Bunny and Batman, entering the public domain and being used in ways that fans may not be expecting.

John also touched on how this new take on the classic Winnie the Pooh story will be drastically different from what we know and love. In the film, Christopher Robin abandons Pooh and Piglet in the 100 Acre Woods, only to return and find them feral and on a carnivorous rampage.
