John Savage: Developing the Complete Lacrosse Player at Jesters Lacrosse

Listen Later

đź“– Episode Description:
In this episode, Scotty sits down with John Savage, Director of Player Development for Jesters Lacrosse, to dive deep into what true lacrosse development really looks like—from youth levels all the way to college and beyond. John reflects on his decorated coaching career, including leading Nassau Community College to back-to-back national championships, ending a 13-year title drought, and the lasting impact that program has had on his life as both a player and coach.

John shares powerful insights from his years coaching elite collegiate and professional talent, including what separates good players from great ones, why lacrosse IQ matters as much as skill, and how bad habits formed at young ages can limit players later on. The conversation explores his philosophy around layering skills, correcting biomechanics, teaching players to read defensive pressure, and moving beyond “dodge-and-shoot” lacrosse into a system-based, high-IQ game.

The episode also dives into John’s passion for teaching and mentorship, his belief in building relationships before demanding performance, and why fundamentals and simplicity remain the foundation of elite play. He explains the mission behind Savage Lacrosse, his player development training company, and how it aligns seamlessly with the Jesters’ vision. Wrapping up, John shares his long-term vision for the Boys Jesters program and why Long Island is primed to become a national development hub.

This episode is a must-listen for players, parents, and coaches who care more about development over trophies, process over hype, and building athletes—and people—the right way.
