Chris “Kip” Johnson is the new chief of the Jasper Fire Department. He was elected to the position by his fellow firefighters in December and took over the position Jan. 1. Johnson replaces Jeff Leslie, who joined the Jasper Fire Department in 1983 and had been chief for around 16 or 17 years. Leslie said he thought that was long enough and that it was time for someone younger to step into the role. He plans to remain on the fire department for a few years to help with the transition.
