Scripture: Jonah 1-2; Matthew 12:39, Nineveh is a large Assyrian city over 500 miles northeast of Israel. Jonah, told to go to Nineveh twice, fled "away from the presence of the Lord". Running from the Lord is a motif in Scripture. Jonah is a "type of Christ" and goes to sleep in the storm. His reason for sleeping is different than Jesus.Just as Jonah feels Nineveh is unworthy of God's mercy, he feels in his Chapter 2 prayer that he is unworthy of God's mercy. Every line of Jonah'y prayer drips with deep reflection and meaning.
