The truth is that the idea of a British liberal democracy is unravelling before our eyes. When the guardians of the liberal order, of the rule of law and humanitarianism, are unmasked as charlatans – as is the case with both Starmer and Biden – the forces of darkness rush in to fill the void.

In reporting the Amsterdam violence as antisemitism, the western media didn't make a mistake. They knowingly aired disinformation. They peddled fake news. Admitting that requires a troubling recalibration of perspective if we are ever to understand the world we live in.

The darkest days in Europe’s history are indeed back with us. But not because a bunch of Israeli football hooligans ended up receiving as much violence in Amsterdam as they tried to dish out. It is back because the West is all too ready to embrace Israel’s anti-Arab, anti-Muslim bigotry.

A year too late, and in typically mendacious fashion, the Guardian finally concedes it's ok to use the term ‘genocide’ about Gaza – as it also warns that the genocide has reached its very final stage.

Trump or Harris, a further slide towards authoritarianism and repression was always on the cards. A corrupt, failed system won't admit its mistakes. It will find scapegoats.

Western publics are being subjected to a campaign of psychological warfare by their politicians and media, where genocide is classed as ‘self-defence’ and opposition to it ‘terrorism’.

Israel is not “remaking the Middle East”. It is destroying the world as we have known it for generations. What Israel has made clear, supported by western capitals, is that there is no safe place, not even for those recovering in a hospital bed from Israel’s earlier atrocities. There are no “non-combatants”, no civilians. There are no rules. Everyone is a target.

Why is the western media failing to note the difference between “abducted” civilians and “captured” soldiers in its reporting of the Israelis held in Gaza? Because language strongly shapes how we feel emotionally about news events.
