⚡ The 10 Brain Busters
1 — Motor Calculations A 5 HP, 230V single-phase motor with a 1.15 service factor and 22A nameplate current. The question covers branch-circuit conductor sizing and the maximum initial overload setting under 430.32(A)(1).
2 — Box Fill How many #12 AWG THHN conductors can be installed in a 4" × 4" metal box that is 1½" deep? A practical breakdown of box volume and conductor volume allowances.
3 — IMC What is the maximum trade size permitted for IMC? This question focuses on finding the applicable NEC article and table.
4 — Noncoincident Motor A feeder supplies a 30A air compressor and a 24A dust collector, but the equipment is designed so only one can operate at a time. What load must be calculated?
5 — Dwelling Receptacle Spacing A 14-foot living room wall is unbroken by doors, fireplaces, or similar openings. How many receptacle outlets are required under 210.52(A)(1)?
6 — Grounding Electrodes A dwelling service has two 8-foot ground rods installed six feet apart. The first rod measures 38 ohms to earth. What does the NEC require?
7 — Commercial Kitchen Demand What types of commercial kitchen equipment may be included when applying the demand factors in 120.56?
8 — Commercial Kitchen Load A restaurant feeder supplies a 12 kW electric range, 8 kW deep fryer, 10 kW griddle, and 15 kW convection oven. What is the calculated demand load after applying the applicable demand factor?
9 — Household Electric Ranges Four household electric ranges are each rated at 14 kW. Using Table 220.55 and the applicable notes, what is the calculated demand load?
10 — Dwelling General Lighting Load A 2,400-square-foot single-family dwelling raises an important distinction: the NEC uses different VA-per-square-foot values for determining minimum branch circuits versus performing feeder/service load calculations.
📚 What This Study Session Taught Me
The biggest lesson from these ten questions is that the NEC rewards process, not memorization.
It's much more valuable to know how to open the Code, identify the correct article, find the applicable table, read the notes, recognize what information matters, and verify the answer.
Some of these questions were straightforward. Others required digging through the Code and reconsidering the calculation.
I'm still an apprentice, still learning, and still making mistakes. I'm documenting that process because learning the NEC is something I'm taking seriously.
Study the Code. Ask questions. Work through the problems. Learn from your mistakes. Then do another one.
