Improvisation is rarely taught to classical musicians, and is seldom seen during performances. Instead we are expected to read or play memorized music straight from the text, while musicians in other fields like jazz are the ones improvising. So why should we care? Do you ever wish that you could go back and teach your younger self how to practice more effectively? While unfortunately time travel is still not an option, we can live and learn. These are some things I have learned over the years, and hopefully they can help you as well!

Growing up, I was involved in a variety of musical styles and genres, so improvising was something I learned to do simply by being around other musicians who improvised as well. However when I went to college for music, I found that most classical musicians never learn the art of improvisation. This eventually became the subject matter for my DMA dissertation.
