What happens when you stop looking outward and begin listening inward?
In this episode of the Journey Couture Podcast, Melissa LeAira explores a powerful eyes-closed somatic practice designed to quiet mental chatter, soften the inner critic, and reconnect you with your instinctive knowing. By temporarily removing our primary source of sensory input, we create space to notice the subtle frequencies, sensations, impulses, and “waking dreams” often drowned out by judgment and external expectations.
Melissa invites listeners to honor their imagination, trust the wisdom of the body, and begin building sovereignty through small, intentional acts of somatic exploration. From journaling whimsical thoughts to moving safely through familiar spaces with your eyes closed, these practices can help restore your inner compass and strengthen self-trust.
The episode closes with a reflection on the dragonfly—a living symbol of transformation and a reminder of the miraculous change available to each of us within a single lifetime.
In This Episode
Major Takeaways
Track Your Own System: Instead of constantly assessing what others are doing, pause and notice what is happening inside your emotional, physical, and energetic body.
Create Mindful Sensory Pauses: Closing or covering your eyes while remaining awake can reduce external input and help you become more attuned to your internal experience.
Honor Your Imagination: Daydreams, creative visions, and whimsical thoughts may contain meaningful information. Rather than dismissing them, write them down and place “a pin in them” for later reflection.
Build Self-Trust Through Listening: You do not have to act immediately on every inner message. The practice begins with listening without judgment or dismissal.
Remember Your Capacity for Transformation: Like the dragonfly, human beings are capable of profound change, reinvention, and emergence throughout a lifetime.
Suggested Somatic Practices
Only try these practices in a familiar, uncluttered space where you can move safely.
Stop immediately if you feel dizzy, unsafe, disoriented, or physically uncomfortable.
Memorable Quotes
“We spend a lot of time assessing and analyzing what's going on outside of us. But it has become rare that we are taking stock, taking note of what is happening within our own system.”
“We are just a complex piece of hardware, and input is primarily through our eyes. And so the only way to shut it down is to really mindfully close one's eyes, cover the eyes, remain awake, and then we move about and we trust our instinct.”
“The imagination is what progresses us. So, when it works to our benefit, we're totally in acceptance of it... but really our imagination should be much more highly considered in the day-to-day operations of our life.”
“Building our self-trust is about listening, not dismissing what's coming from within.”
“Be courageous. Be trusting with your body and trust that you know the way, because you do.”
“The dragonfly is an incredible testament to transformation, going through a physical transformation... it's a miraculous transformation that one being can go through in one lifetime. And so as a human, I believe that we can also do the same. And this practice is an instigator for transformation.”

In this episode of the Journey Couture Podcast, Melissa shares the whole picture behind her work, her lived experience, and the many threads that have shaped her path: herbalism, alcohol, motherhood, marriage, mission-driven work, plant medicine, nervous system support, spiritual awakening, and conscious connection.
Melissa begins by sharing one of the most important qualifications she brings to this conversation: she drank for nearly 35 years. She knows what it feels like to be a mother, a wife, a working woman, and a career-builder trying to hold everything together while navigating stress, exhaustion, relationships, parenting, ambition, anxiety, and the hidden ways alcohol can become woven into daily life.
She also shares her 15-year background in the natural products industry, where she worked with companies rooted in organic ingredients, fair trade, sustainability, clean quality products, traditional herbal medicine, and earth stewardship. Through this work, Melissa developed a deep reverence for plants, soil, farmers, cultivation, harvest timing, and the care required to turn living plants into healing products.
This episode explores how plant medicine entered Melissa’s life during a season of panic, depletion, sleep disruption, motherhood pressure, marriage strain, and emotional overwhelm. Instead of immediately being placed on pharmaceuticals, she was guided toward a naturopathic path — and that choice opened a new doorway.
Through herbal supplements, adaptogens, nervines, functional drinks, and plant-based rituals, Melissa began to experience better sleep, less anxiety, stronger immunity, and a deeper relationship with her body and nervous system.
She also speaks to the importance of replacement rituals when alcohol is removed. For many women, drinking is not only about the substance — it is also about comfort, stress relief, reward, ritual, social connection, and the nervous system looking for a way to soften. Melissa shares why functional mocktails, herbal drinks, and intentional plant-based supports can become part of the bridge back to balance.
This conversation is about more than quitting drinking. It is about the full Journey Couture lens: body, mind, spirit, beauty, nature, sobriety, curiosity, intention, reverence, reclamation, and creating a life that feels consciously chosen.
In This Episode, Melissa shares about:
Key Themes
Lived experience is qualification.
Melissa brings the truth of nearly 35 years of drinking, motherhood, marriage, career pressure, healing, and reclamation into the conversation. This is not theory. This is lived wisdom.
Plants work.
Herbs, adaptogens, nervines, and functional plant-based support helped Melissa restore sleep, calm her nervous system, reduce anxiety, support immunity, and rebuild a relationship with her body.
Motherhood and alcohol deserve honest conversation.
Melissa speaks to the reality of being a working mother and wife trying to manage children, career, marriage, friendships, stress, and exhaustion while alcohol remained part of the coping pattern.
Mission-driven work matters.
Her years in the natural products industry gave her firsthand experience with brands that value organic ingredients, fair trade, sustainability, traditional herbalism, clean quality products, and reverence for the earth.
Nature does not run on corporate timelines.
Plants grow at their own pace. Crops can shift. Harvests can fail. Potency matters. Timing matters. Human care matters. Real plant medicine requires patience, respect, and stewardship.
Replacement rituals are powerful.
When alcohol is removed, the body and nervous system still need comfort, rhythm, nourishment, and support. Functional mocktails, herbal drinks, nervines, and plant-based rituals can help create a new experience of relief and restoration.
Healing is the whole journey.
This episode moves through alcohol, herbalism, motherhood, anxiety, career, farming, mission-driven brands, spiritual awakening, and conscious connection because healing is never just one thing.
Connection is medicine.
Melissa closes by honoring conscious connecting, story-sharing, collaboration, and the healing power of being inspired by one another.
Memorable Reflections
Plants saved my life.
Not as a quick fix.
Not as a trend.
Not as a magic pill.
Plants entered my life at a time when I was exhausted, anxious, overwhelmed, drinking, mothering, working, and trying to keep everything together.
They helped me sleep.
They helped my nervous system.
They helped my body remember how to function.
And over time, they gave me something even deeper: reverence.
Reverence for the soil.
Reverence for the farmers.
Reverence for the harvest.
Reverence for the body.
Reverence for the whole journey.

My Personal Story about How herbs, nature, and conscious recovery changed everything
I drank for 35 years.
I was a working mother, a wife, a career woman trying to do it all — managing kids, relationships, expectations, pressure, and ambition.
I WAS LIVING THE "PRESCRIBED LIFE" !!
And like so many of us, I drank. It was normalized. It was rewarded. It was everywhere.
At the same time, I spent decades working in the natural products industry — with mission-driven, fair-trade brands, plant stewards, ethical farmers, and companies rooted in reverence for the Earth and human health. I worked with elixirs, creams, raw materials, and living plants. I saw firsthand how plants are grown, cultivated, harvested, and respected for their potency and intelligence.
I also watched what happened when large chemical and mass-market corporations bought up many of those natural brands — and how we are now seeing similar patterns emerge with pharma, mushrooms, and cannabis.
In this video, I talk about:
The turning point came when I asked a therapist for a prescription for anxiety and panic attacks — and instead, she recommended a natural, plant-based route.
That decision — and those plants — saved my life.
Even while I was still drinking, herbs supported my sleep, my immune system, my nervous system, and my resilience. And when alcohol was removed, my body, mind, and spirit were able to recover far more quickly with the help of plants.
This is not about replacing one dependency with another.
It’s about supporting the body’s innate ability to heal.
Today, I coach and support people who are choosing (or curious about) an alcohol-free lifestyle, helping them thoughtfully and safely incorporate herbs and plant allies as part of nervous system repair, emotional regulation, and embodied recovery.
If you’ve ever questioned your relationship with alcohol…
If you’ve felt dismissed, over-medicated, or unheard…
If you’re curious about plant-supported recovery that honors the whole human —
This conversation is for you.
