In part one of this in-depth conversation with Petra founder, Bob Hartman, we talk about Bob's early influences and the guitarists that captured his attention as a young musician. Bob talks about his faith journey and the bands he played in before founding Petra. As we work our way through Petra's style adaptation, we dig into the challenges of writing for a new audience. Bob share some of the major struggles Petra endured over the years and how the band almost hung up their instruments at the end of the Volz era.
There is much great Petra history covered in this episode, so share it with your friends who love Petra.

The dB's may not be a household name in the mainstream of Rock, but for those that enjoy the alleyways and cul-de-sacs of popular music, The dB's stand with a handful of other bands that unintentionally helped start a new genre of music.
In this conversation, I speak with Peter Holsapple and Will Rigby about their music journey, the re-release of their album 'Repercussion', and their experiences in the music industry over the decades. We discuss their unique sound, influences, connections with other bands like R.E.M., and the nostalgia of revisiting their earlier works.
"Repercussion" is seen by many as the crown jewel of the band's catalogue and it has been remastered for re-release on October 18, 2024, available on vinyl for the first time in the US.

I want to thank Chris Taylor for letting me use Arise and Shine free of charge for the first 3 seasons. I will be using a new, shorter intro going forward (gotta keep it fresh). The montage intro includes the voices of two friends; Emma says "Bryan," and Sean says "Frazier." And my wonderful sons, Luke and Jacob say "and our dad." It was a very personal intro for me.

James Horner composed music for over 160 films during the course of his remarkable career. Among his many works are music scores for some of the biggest films in Hollywood history, like Avatar and Titanic, and epic films such as Braveheart and Glory. But beyond all of the big movies; beyond the multiple Oscars, Grammys, Golden Globes and countless other awards, was a quiet and private man who was quirky and complex. No one knew James better than his wife, Sara Horner.
In this exclusive interview, Sara helps us to see James in a way that no one else can. We are escorted into the home and the world that James grew up in during our conversation. We learn how James' father, Harry, played a significant part of shaping James into the man he would become. Sara shares about James' work routine, his work ethic, and describes what the ride was like as James journeyed from a young composer working on small student films, to becoming one of the most successful and famous composers in History.
If you are a fan of James Horner, there is no doubt that you will learn much through this wonderful conversation.
A very special thank you to the lovely Sara Horner, for her time and insights. She was a delight to speak with and this conversation will remain as one I will treasure.

Grammy Award winning songwriter and vocalist Bryan Duncan has had a 50+ year career that began in the Jesus Movement. His seminole group, The Sweet Comfort Band, helped launch modern CCM. After going solo in the mid 1980s, Bryan's soulful vocals, songwriting skills and fun personality, helped him to reach the upper echelon in the CCM world. In this in-depth two-part conversation, Bryan and I cover the earliest of days inside the Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa tent, all the way through to what he's doing today.
Bryan's honesty and dry wit made for a truly interesting conversation filled with insights gained by man who has the gift of being able to look back at where he's been.
Bryan's music has been deeply meaningful to me for over 40 years, often bringing solace and comfort at just the right time. I am grateful for this other Bryan with a Y.
Part 2 will be released on Monday September 1, 2024. Bryan shares his thoughts as he looks back at his long career, and much more. AND there is a surprise appearance by the one and only Phil Keaggy with a special message for Bryan!

Jenn Franklin is an indie artist that everyone needs to hear. Simply put, Jenn is one of the best indie songwriters and vocalists I have come across since I have been hosting Journey to the Stage. With a powerful voice trained in Rock bands, Jenn can bring a great sense of strength to a song. Along with that potency, Jenn has spent considerable time behind the piano crafting songs that are filled with vulnerability and contemplation, sung with a quiet passion. With her vocal ability paired with a deep sense of melody and lyric creation, Jenn embodies all the elements of a great artist.
In this delightful conversation, we chat about Jenn's journey as an artist which started before she sang in a biker bar at age 12. We spend time talking about her brand new album, "Truth About Monsters" and play an incredible song titled "As Far As You Go."

Peter, Paul and Mary, the iconic folk trio of the 1960s, achieved remarkable success and left an indelible mark on the American music landscape and social conscience. With their rich and unforgettable harmonies and lyrics that led the charge for societal change, they became the voice of a generation, producing timeless hits like "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Leaving on a Jet Plane." Their influence extended beyond music, contributing significantly to the Civil Rights and Anti-War movements of the era. Following the group's disbandment, Noel Paul Stookey embarked on a solo career, where he continued to enchant audiences with his poignant songwriting and soulful performances. His solo work, characterized by its spiritual and introspective themes, further solidified his reputation as a distinguished and impactful artist in the folk music genre.
In this most memorable conversation, Noel and I cover the span of his life, from learning what harmony is by singing as a child with his father, through the highs of Peter, Paul, and Mary, to his wonderful solo career. The highlight is being treated to a special performance of "Wedding Song (There is Love)"
Noel is one of my musical heroes, whose voice has been part of my life for as long as I could remember, and it was a great honor to have such a delightful conversation with him.

Over the last 20+ years, Emmy Award winning composer Bear McCreary has created a beautiful, powerful and impressive body of work that spans across media forms. With sprawling musical diversity, Bear has composed for video games, television and film, becoming one of the most sought-after composers in Hollywood.
Bear's credits include "The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power," "The Walking Dead," "Battlestar Galactica (2004)," "Agents of SHIELD," and countless more.
In this in-depth interview, Bear and I talk about his earliest days, falling in love with the music of movies at age 5. We spend considerable time discussing a teenage Bear's chance meeting with film music pillar, Elmer Bernstein, and how that meeting would change Bear's life forever.
We ended our time talking about Bear's debut Rock concept album, "The Singularity." This powerhouse album features musical greats like Slash, Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Rufus Wainwright, Corey Taylor (Slipknot), and many more. As a natural-born storyteller, Bear began writing segments of the story as a teen. "The Singularity" is available on all streaming platforms.
A heartfelt thank you to Bear for his time and the wonderful and insightful conversation. A special thank you to Joe Augustine and Marisa Gunzenhauser from Spark & Shadows for greenlighting and logistical help to make my chat with Bear possible.
A great way to support artists and composers is to purchase their works. You can purchase a CD or beautiful 3 album colored vinyl version of "The Singularity" by clicking here: https://www.madebymutant.com/release/445917-bear-mccreary-the-singularity
