  • Canada's Queen of Fart Walks: Mairlyn Smith at Age 72 on Saying Yes to Travel and New Adventures

Travel for women over 50 doesn't have to mean a passport and a long-haul flight. For Mairlyn Smith, it means seeing every province in Canada, renting an RV in Newfoundland, and finding out her quiet husband turns into a chatterbox the minute they leave home. If you've ever told yourself you're too old to try something new, this conversation is going to push back on that, kindly but firmly.

In this episode of JourneyWoman's Ageless Adventuress Travel Podcast, host Kathy Buckworth talks with her longtime friend Mairlyn Smith. Mairlyn is a professional home economist, a Second City alumna, the author of eight bestselling cookbooks, and the creator of the viral #FartWalk. At 72, she's working on a Master of Science at the University of Guelph and making friends in their twenties. She explains why "yes, and" from improv still shapes how she lives, and why she jumps off the dock every year. She also shares her best travel advice. Pack prunes. Book a room with a fridge. Fly midweek, and skip layovers. Then she talks about Peace, Love and Fibre and why fibre may be the key to a longer health span. Her parting advice is simple: you don't have to feel brave. Do it scared, and take a leap into your life.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • Why Mairlyn went back to university at 72, and what sharing a classroom with twenty-somethings has taught her about age and uncertainty.

    • How #FartWalk started as a private joke, became a concussion recovery exercise, and ended up with more than 14 million views and a fundraiser for Diabetes Canada.

    • What travelling to every province by car, plane and RV showed her about how different Canadians are, and about her own husband.

    • Why she never travels without prunes, and how a room with a fridge and a grocery store run keep her eating well on the road.

    • Her money saving tips: travel off season, avoid weekend flights, and skip layovers to protect both your budget and your health.

    • Why she wrote Peace, Love and Fibre, and what long-term studies say about fibre, health span and living well for longer.

  • What Nobody Tells You About Accessible Travel: Sylvia Longmire On Travelling To 48 Countries In A Wheelchair

In this episode of the JourneyWoman Ageless Adventuress Travel Podcast, host Kathy Buckworth talks with Sylvia Longmire, the MS advocate better known as Spin the Globe. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2005, Sylvia has visited 59 countries, 48 of them as a wheelchair user and 34 of those completely on her own. She and Kathy get into what actually changes about a destination once you're seeing it from a wheelchair: which cities get it right, which ones don't, and the wheelchair-damage statistic almost no traveller knows exists. They also talk about Accessible Explorer, the AI-powered travel coaching app Sylvia launched September 1st, and Walking Dreams, her documentary project on why the vast majority of wheelchair users still dream they can walk. Sylvia lays out the difference between the medical and social models of disability in a way that reframes the whole conversation, and makes a strong, funny case for why cruising might be the easiest way for a first-time solo wheelchair traveller to dip a toe in the water.

    About Our Guest

Sylvia Longmire is an Air Force veteran, writer, and accessible travel advocate who has never let multiple sclerosis, or the wheelchair that came after her 2005 diagnosis, slow her travel schedule. She writes only about places she has been to herself, which is how her wheelchair-accessibility reporting ended up in the New York Times, New Mobility Magazine, Lonely Planet, and the Matador Travel Network. Her accessible travel blog, Spin the Globe, has picked up its own following, and she's published several books, including two photography collections (The View from Down Here and The View from Down Here 2), a guide to wheelchair-accessible cruising, and the solo travel memoir What Happened to You, named for the question strangers ask her more often than she'd like.

Sylvia's work carried forward through the Prejax Foundation, the nonprofit she founded in 2015 to fund college scholarships for students affected by MS. These days she's a voice actor with her own media company, Wheels Up Media, is producing a documentary called Walking Dreams, is weeks from launching an AI-powered accessible travel app called Accessible Explorer, and is preparing to give her first TEDx talk this October in Orlando.

  • The "Indiana Jones for Girls": Alice Morrison's Solo Adventures in Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Africa

In this episode of JourneyWoman's The Ageless Adventuress Travel Podcast, host Kathy Buckworth talks with adventurer, writer, and TV presenter Alice Morrison, joining from her home in Morocco's Atlas Mountains. Alice shares the story behind her recent world-first expedition β€” becoming the first recorded person to walk the length of Saudi Arabia, north to south β€” including what it was like to be treated as an "honorary male" while walking with an all-male crew, and how that unusual status let her also connect with local women in a way no male explorer ever could. The conversation moves through her childhood in Uganda, her earlier career in journalism before she "quit the rat race to join the bike race," and why she believes travel doesn't need to be extreme to be transformative. Alice and Kathy talk candidly about what it's really like for women over 50 to travel solo in traditional societies, how discomfort on the road builds real confidence, and the power of letting people tell their own stories.

    About Our Guest

Alice Morrison is an adventurer, TV presenter, and writer who has spent the last decade-plus turning "furthest place on earth" ambitions into world-first expeditions. Born in Edinburgh in 1963 and raised for her early years in Uganda, she went on to study Arabic and Turkish at Edinburgh University and build a long career in journalism, including roles at BBC News and BBC Arabic, before leaving her corporate career in 2011 to cycle 12,500 km from Cairo to Cape Town. An experience that became her first book, Dodging Elephants. She went on to move permanently to Morocco and rack up a string of world-first expeditions, including the Atlas-to-Atlantic trek, the length of the Draa River, and a multi-year trilogy across the Sahara and Atlas regions that became her book Walking with Nomads, runner-up for the 2023 Edward Stanford Travel Book of the Year. Her most recent milestone, completed in December 2024, was becoming the first recorded person to walk the full length of Saudi Arabia, north to south. She now lives full-time in Morocco's Atlas Mountains, continuing to write, speak, and produce her own podcast, Alice in Wanderland.

  • Radio Icon Erin Davis Isn't Waiting For Permission: Travelling Solo at 63

In this candid and deeply moving episode of The JourneyWoman's Ageless Adventuress Travel Podcast, Kathy Buckworth sits down with Canadian broadcasting legend Erin Davis: 30-year veteran of Toronto's CHFI Morning Show, bestselling author, and co-host of the podcasts Drift and Gracefully and Frankly, to talk about what happens when you finally stop waiting. At 63, Erin spent four months living solo in Mexico, navigating a new language, a cartel lockdown, and her first real taste of independence after a lifetime of putting everyone else's schedule first. From singing karaoke in Spanish to staying calm while the news cycle panicked on her behalf, Erin's story is proof that grief, age, and uncertainty don't have to be the things that keep you home.

    Takeaways

    • You don't need to be single to travel solo, you just need to stop waiting for your partner's schedule to clear up.
    • Pack a little of the language before you pack your bags. A few words of courtesy go further than a phrasebook ever will.
    • Skip the glossy tourism site, local Facebook groups and expat pages give you the real, unfiltered lay of the land.
    • A tour company isn't a crutch, it's a buffet: you get the luggage help, the insider access, and the hotels you'd never have booked yourself.
    • When news breaks about danger in a place you're visiting, listen to people who are actually there, not just headlines and always listen to what local authorities tell you to do.
    • Don't wait for "someday." Bodies change, knees give out, opportunities close. If it's on the list, go now.

  • No Apologies: Andrea Bain on Learning to Travel Solo

In this inspiring episode of The JourneyWoman's Ageless Adventuress Travel Podcast, Kathy Buckworth sits down with Andrea Bain β€” TV host, author, podcaster, and co-host of the award-winning national talk show The Social on CTV β€” to talk all things travel. From growing up in a family where annual vacations were non-negotiable, to solo adventures in Morocco's Atlas Mountains, Andrea shares how travel has become her greatest reset, her creative fuel, and her most powerful act of self-care. If you've been waiting for a sign to book that trip, this episode is it.

    Takeaways

    • Stop waiting for the group chat, if no one can come, go anyway. Solo travel is freeing, not lonely.
    • Slow down. Stay longer in fewer places. Shop local, eat local, talk to people. That's where the real trip lives.
    • Travel is a mental health reset, not a luxury. Andrea's rule: one trip a year, or else.
    • Don't let other people talk you out of a destination. Do your research, find a guided group if needed, and go.
    • Unplug on purpose. Airplane mode from takeoff to landing, photos only, no scrolling.
    • Spend on experiences (tours, excursions, cultural moments), not souvenirs you'll never use.
    • Pack carry-on only. Roll clothes like a crepe, max three pairs of shoes, bring detergent strips.
    • Compression socks and a facial mist are non-negotiables on any flight.
    • If solo travel feels scary, start small, a solo dinner, an overnight in your own city. Baby steps count.

Dr. Sandy, as many of her patients call her, now limits her practice to patients who are residents in long term care facilities and hospice care. She enjoys the challenges of geriatric patients and feels the Lord has called her to work with the very frail and fragile patients who are in the "November and December" of their lives. She has served in the past as president of the Texas Geriatric Society. She currently serves as the Medical Director for Windcrest Health and Rehab and she is one of the physicians for Hospice of the Big Country. But Dr. Sandy wears other hats besides her "doctor" hat. She is a mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother. She is also a widow. The love of her life, her husband, Don Hazelip, died 20 years ago. She is also a published author and lecturer and has spoken in the United States, China, Germany, Croatia, Romania, Russia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Zambia on women's health issues. She also has participated in and taught Bible lessons for Ladies' Retreats in those countries. One of her greatest joys has been the experience of taking her grandchildren on short term mission trips during the past 18 years to Zambia, Russia, China, Cambodia, and Romania. But let me give you fair warning, do not ask her about her four "youngest" grandchildren, who are all adopted from China, unless you have a lot of time to hear all about "how cute, smart, and wonderful they are." Ellie Hamby lives in Abilene, Texas and is an international documentary photographer. She has traveled to 107 countries and all seven continents "always with my camera at my side." She speaks about photography and her photographs have been featured in magazines, brochures and exhibitions both in the United States and Africa. Her international business, Photos by Ellie, features her photographs on postcards, bookmarks, and note cards. Currently she serves as a Director of Zambia Medical Mission. This medical mission takes place in the country of Zambia every July and provides medical care in very remote areas to approximately 13,000 Zambians over a two-week period of time. Ellie maintains a home in Namwianga, Zambia and continues to return there several times each year to help oversee the work of Zambia Mission, which includes schools, a hospital, a radio station and several orphanages. She serves on the board of Zambia Mission. Ellie has three children who have blessed with grandchildren.
