The Joyful Mysteries of the Holy Rosary are a set of five events from the early life of Jesus and His Blessed Mother, focusing on the joy and blessings of the Incarnation. These mysteries are traditionally prayed on Mondays and Saturdays, as well as on Sundays during Advent. They are as follows:
The Annunciation
The Angel Gabriel visits the Virgin Mary in Nazareth and announces that she will conceive a child by the Holy Spirit. Mary accepts God's will with her fiat, saying, "Let it be done to me according to your word."
The Visitation
Mary, after receiving the message from the Angel, goes to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who is pregnant with John the Baptist. Upon Mary's greeting, Elizabeth’s child leaps in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, praises Mary as the "Mother of my Lord."
The Nativity of Jesus
Jesus is born in Bethlehem to Mary and Joseph. The birth of the Savior brings great joy, and He is laid in a manger because there was no room at the inn. Angels announce His birth to shepherds, who come to adore Him.
The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple
Forty days after His birth, Mary and Joseph take the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem to present Him to God, in accordance with Jewish law. The holy man Simeon, inspired by the Holy Spirit, recognizes Jesus as the Messiah and prophesies that He will be the light for revelation to the Gentiles and the glory of Israel. Simeon also foretells the sorrow that Mary will experience.
The Finding of Jesus in the Temple
After the annual Passover pilgrimage to Jerusalem, Mary and Joseph discover that Jesus, now twelve years old, has stayed behind in the Temple. After three days, they find Him teaching the elders, who are amazed at His wisdom. Mary and Joseph are astonished, but Jesus responds, "Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business?"
These mysteries celebrate the joy of Jesus' coming into the world and the early moments of His life, highlighting Mary’s faith, obedience, and role as the Mother of God.
