Joyful Mysteries (Mondays & Saturdays)

Listen Later

The Joyful Mysteries of the Holy Rosary focus on the joyful events in the life of Jesus and His mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, particularly related to the Incarnation and early years of Christ. These mysteries are traditionally prayed on Mondays and Saturdays, as well as Sundays during the season of Advent.

The five Joyful Mysteries are:

1. The Annunciation

This mystery reflects on the moment when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary and announced that she would conceive and bear the Son of God (Luke 1:26-38). Mary humbly accepted God’s will, saying, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”

2. The Visitation

In this mystery, Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth, who is also expecting a child (John the Baptist). Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, recognizes Mary as the Mother of the Lord, and Mary responds with her Magnificat, a beautiful prayer of praise (Luke 1:39-56).

3. The Nativity

This mystery recalls the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. Mary gave birth to Jesus in a humble stable and laid Him in a manger because there was no room at the inn (Luke 2:1-20). This mystery celebrates the gift of God becoming man in the form of a child for the salvation of humanity.

4. The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple

This mystery focuses on the presentation of the infant Jesus in the Temple in Jerusalem. Following Jewish law, Mary and Joseph presented Him to the Lord, and the prophets Simeon and Anna recognized Him as the Messiah (Luke 2:22-40). Simeon foretold that Jesus would be a light to the nations, and that Mary would share in His sufferings.

5. The Finding of Jesus in the Temple

This mystery recalls the time when Mary and Joseph, after three days of searching, found the young Jesus teaching the elders in the Temple (Luke 2:41-52). Jesus explained that He must be in His Father’s house, revealing His deep understanding of His divine mission even as a child.

How to Pray the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary

The general structure for praying the Rosary is the same for all the sets of mysteries, including the Joyful Mysteries. Here is a step-by-step guide:

1. Make the Sign of the Cross

Begin by making the sign of the cross and reciting the Apostles’ Creed to profess your faith.

2. Pray the Our Father

On the first large bead, pray the Our Father, offering it for the intentions of the Holy Father and the Church.

3. Pray Three Hail Marys

On the next three small beads, pray three Hail Marys, asking for an increase in faith, hope, and charity.

4. Pray the Glory Be

After the three Hail Marys, pray the Glory Be to the Father, and you may also add the Fatima Prayer:

“O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy.”

5. Announce the First Joyful Mystery

Announce the first Joyful Mystery (The Annunciation) and then pray the Our Father on the large bead that follows.

6. Pray Ten Hail Marys

On each of the ten small beads, pray a Hail Mary while meditating on the first mystery.

7. Pray the Glory Be and Fatima Prayer

After the ten Hail Marys, pray the Glory Be and the Fatima Prayer as before.

8. Continue with the Other Mysteries

Repeat this process for each of the remaining Joyful Mysteries (The Visitation, The Nativity, The Presentation of Jesus, and The Finding of Jesus in the Temple).

9. Conclude the Rosary

After completing all five decades, pray the Hail, Holy Queen and the concluding prayer:

“O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech Thee, that meditating upon these mysteries of the most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.”

10. Make the Sign of the Cross

Finish the Rosary by making the sign of the cross.
